Obituary of William W. Funk

The Reverend William Warren Funk II, 78, of State College, PA, passed away on January 5, 2017 in State College, PA. Bill was born in Philadelphia, PA to Grace Miriam (née Ludwig) and Warren Maurice Funk on November 4, 1938. He spent his formative years in Nescopeck, PA and graduated from Nescopeck High School in 1956. A 1960 graduate of Bloomsburg University he majored in English and History. Bill played clarinet in the Bloomsburg University Maroon and Gold Band and participated in the University's golf club. He also worked at the local radio station as an announcer during college. After college, Bill served two years in the army stationed in Puerto Rico. While stationed, he worked as an announcer at the Army's radio station before he was honorably discharged. Bill later received a Master of Divinity from Drew University. He served various parishes within the United Methodist Church's Susquehanna Conference including Centralia, New Paris, Osceola Mills and Belleville. He married Barbara Mae Lucas on July 26, 1969 in Beaverdale, PA. Bill worked as a teacher for the Clearfield Area School District for 25 years. During his summers in Clearfield, Bill enjoyed providing ministry services for the campers at Parker Dam State Park. Bill loved bicycling, swimming and playing tennis. He coached tennis at the Clearfield Area High School and he also organized open tennis tournaments in Clearfield. In his retirement years he enjoyed playing golf with the Burning Tee Golf League and playing chess at Schlow Library. He was an avid reader and also a ham radio enthusiast. He attended St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in State College. Bill is survived by his children, daughter Melissa and husband Kenneth Weller of Brooklyn, NY, and son Alan and wife Lacy Funk of Alburtis, PA. Grandchildren include Desmond Funk and Wyatt Weller. He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace L. Funk, and father, W. Maurice Funk. Funeral service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Monday January 16, 2017 at 10:00am with Father Doug Dailey of St. Andrew's officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery, Berwick, PA.
