My depest sympathies to the family.
I was a graduate student in the IE department 1984-1988 and had took a self-study queuing class with Dr. Rosenshine. There were three of us interested in the class but not enough to offer the class for registration and he agreed to do it as a self-study, meeting with us once a week for 2-3 hours - very typical of him. I also had the "pleasure" of traveling with him 3 times to conferences. The first to Dallas for an IIE Conference via LaGuardia. We arrived in NYC early so he dropped 3 of us off at the Empire State Bldg while he drove around the block. In the middle of the conference he wanted to host a party for students to recruit for the PSU IE graduate program. Before I knew it there was beer and wine in my hotel room bathtub and snacks all over my room as I was staying in the student hotel and it was esier to get the students there. A secondtrip, my brother and I traveled to western NY with him to visit the SUNY Fredonia campus to talk to Math/OR students about PSU IE. We detoured to Kinzu Dam on the way. The third and most memorable was a trip to Atlanta for an ORSA/TIMS (precursor to INFORMS) conference. We drove through the night, stopping at NC State to rest in the Student Union. To keep himself awake, as he did all of the driving, he sang - --songs I had never heard before! It was always an adventure traveling with him!
He will be missed by many. I was very saddened to hear the news.

Dear Charlortte,
We are so sad at Matt's passing. We always hoped to see him when we walked by your house because his smile and droll wit brightened many a day. We are so sorry for your loss and that of your beautiful extended family. Jim and Anita Thies
