I am 72 years old, have been retired for 20 years and living in Florida. I graduated from PSU in 1971. Like most college kids, I had very little money. I had a $10 per week allowance, $6 of which paid for groceries. The rest was resered for the Phyrst on Sat. night. I have many great memories of my college days, but at the very top of the list (and the warmest of them all) are my memories of Ernie. I just read the notice of Ernie's passing and even after all these years I am deeply saddened. He was such a very nice man who truly cared for everyone. With the wisdom of the ensuing 51 years comes the realization that there just are not many Ernies in the world. I didn't know Ernie personally - I was just one of the regulars - but even so I felt (and still feel) as if he is my friend. I can still see him in my mind's eye on his stool every Sat. night playing his banjo and entertaining all of the others in the room who felt he was their personal friend - just like me. I shall miss Ernie very much, but I know one day I will see him again for yet another Sat. night. God bless you Ernie and all of your loved ones. You have left us all a truly wonderful and remarkable legacy of love and kindness.
Mike Larcombe - PSU '71

We were so saddened to hear of Ernie's death. And yet we know he will be strummin' his banjo in that heavenly choir, making music that will cause the angels to dance! What an amazing kegacy he leaves ~ a beautiful family, literally 1000's of friends young and old, and so many songs in so many hearts.
Our love and prayers to all the Oelbermann clan. May your memories be full of his smile, his love, and his laughter.
We love you, Ernie ~ you will be missed...

Dear Beck -
I was so sorry to learn of your loss. All these years later, I still remember with so much pleasure and gratitude, the wonderful St. Patrick's Day weekend I spent at your house. You and Ern were such gracious and fun hosts! Ern was one of a kind, and I know that he will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by so many people. I hope the outpouring of love that I am sure you now are seeing for him and for you as well, will provide a bit of comfort. I send you my sincere condolences as well as my prayers for grace and strength for you.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Oelbermann family. Ernie was such a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone that had the privilege of knowing him. I cherish my childhood memories - so lucky to live next door to the Oelbermann's. I remember countless evenings enjoying the music coming from the porch next door! May the many wonderful memories that you have keep Ern close in your heart.

As a former Phyrst bartender, I salute Ernie's lifelong support for family, song, and public fun. I saw him forgive young men who stole beer from his bottle shop, simply because he understood and accepted what deviltry young people can get themselves into. If they paid him for the beer, he would not press charges -- and he frequently gained long-term customers and friends this way. He loved to laugh, and to see others laughing, and this I believe gave him such a long and rewarding life. He is surely laughing and raising a toast with comrades and lovely ladies at this moment.

Ernie Oelbermann - the only thing that sounds better to me is Ernie and Becky Oelbermann. Ern to me was a second father and great friend during my time at PSU and the decades that followed. His love of life was an inspiration to me. Ernie showed that a human being by simply being kind and caring could be as influential as any superstar or any other person of fame.
The zest of life Ernie brought to me and to everyone he encountered created an incredible amount much joy and life warming goodness. His humor and laugh remain a burnt image in my thoughts. What a special person and true reflection of the qualities that our Creator wants all of us to attain.
To Beck and the entire Oelbermann family, your loss is great but the imprint of Ernie's wonderful qualities are effectively part of you and therefore Ern's spirit lives on strongly in and with you. He will be greatly missed. Much love to all.

Dear Becky,
I was deeply saddened by the news of Ernie passing.
My heart felt condolences to you and your family.
I remember our Phyrst Phamly sing along sessions back in my college years, as well as our Phyrst Phamly reunions, that we were able to keep going for about 10 years after graduation!
May the memories of Ernie help you find peace.

Ernie and the Phyrst Phamily were my Saturday night rituals from 1987 until 1989 when I attended PSU in State College. Than afterwards, I went back for Homecoming every year. We had a group from Atlanta that would give shirts to the band. Connie Fisher and Jennifer Dixon were part of the group then. We had great times with everyone. Ernie was a unique guy. He always had fun and took time out to chat with our group. He will always be part of my life since I have a CD from 1999! RIP Ernie! Say hi to JoePa for me!

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Ernie. The first stop on my 21st birthday was to the Phyrst on a Saturday night. I loved hearing the Phyrst Phamily and loved how warm and welcoming the Phyrst felt. Every Saturday night after that until I graduated my friends and I spent at the Phyrst. I was also a lifeguard at the PSU Natatorium and whenever Ernie came in to swim laps he was always smiling and friendly. He will be sorely missed.

So sad to hear of Ernie's passing, but just the thought of him brings a smile to my face. I was a bit adrift after returning to PSU from student teaching, as I didn't want to return to sorority life, but not yet comfortable with my apartment and roommates. Ernie and the guys at the Phyrst filled the void with fun and laughter and helped me to adjust. I remember he loaned me a giant pot to cook a massive amount of potatoes to make potato salad for the wedding reception a friend & bartender was having there. Another fun time was testing a new drink called margarita the guys were attempting. It became my drink of choice. It may be 45 years since those times, but I remember them vividly. My fondest memories of PSU were formed after descending those steps. RIP Ernie! Cheers.

Ernie made State College a better place. Loved hearing him perform with the PHyrst family, but also loved just chatting with him. A few of my friends and I couldn't get football tickets our senior year, so we would go to the Phyrst, order pizza, watch the games with Ernie. Great times!
