Obituary of Guy E. Rindone
Guy E. Rindone, 93, formerly of State College, died Sunday, October 4, 2015, at Little Flower Manor, Darby, PA.
Born August 11, 1922, in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of the late Rocco and Bertha Garstka Rindone. On July 5, 1943, he married Rachel "Rae" Peterson, who died on November 7, 1992.
He is survived by son Wayne P. Rindone of Haverford, son Gary D. Rindone and his wife Leslie of Havertown, granddaughter Laura M. Gipson and her husband Joseph, granddaughter Emily J. Rindone, and great grandson Gabriel Gipson. Along with his wife, Guy was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
As the youngest son of immigrants from Italy and Poland, Guy was aware of the importance of education for his future. He graduated in 1943 from Alfred University with an engineering degree and, after working for Sylvania Electric Products in Massachusetts, moved to State College in 1945 to work toward his Masters degree in Ceramic Science completed in 1946, followed by the completion of his Ph.D. in 1948. In addition to teaching at Penn State in his chosen field, he was mentor to numerous graduate students and served as chair of the Ceramic Science and Engineering Section, Materials Science Department for more than a decade. He retired from the university in 1981 and was granted the status of Professor Emeritus. He was the recipient of numerous professional awards and was a featured presenter at many international meetings related to his field of expertise. He also was a consultant for NASA and corporations related to his field.
Guy was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College, as well as the Centre Hills Country Club. He was an avid gardener and golfer and loved spending winters at his Florida home. His family will remember him for his devotion to his beloved wife and for his kindness to and great affection for his extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Eisenhower Chapel, University Park, State College, with Father David Griffin officiating.
Burial will be private in Spring Creek Presbyterian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship fund for the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (www.ems.psu.edu/giving) or to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/donate).
