Obituary of Jean Benner Guss
A memorial service for Jean Guss will be held on Sunday, November 29 at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in State College. She died peacefully at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jody Hugill, in State College on October 28 at the age of 91. Jean was born in Vicksburg, Pennsylvania on December 22, 1923, and was the only child of Harold and Martha Emery Benner. She grew up on her family’s dairy farm where she met Dr. Samuel Guss, the veterinarian for her father’s herd, whom she married in September, 1942. They raised four children together and traveled extensively, visiting farmers all over the world. She was a faithful assistant to her husband, organizing and preparing his manuscripts. Dr. Guss predeceased her on January 8, 1984. Surviving are her children Dave (Ann), Dan (Gail Addison), John, and Mary (Jody Hugill) all living within two miles of her home. She is survived by seven grandchildren: David, Samantha (Gardner), Nathan (Julie), Sarah (Ernesto) Barnabas, Jonathan, Adam Hugill and Kate Hugill. Also surviving are much-beloved cousins, Betty Rowe and Polly DeHart of Milton, Pa.
Jean was an active member of the State College community, particularly Grace Lutheran Church, Clearwater Conservancy, Veterinary Wives, and the Boalsburg Garden Club. Her interests included quilting, reading, music, gardening, and family. She loved animals of all kinds, particularly her dogs.
She enjoyed many happy years residing on Whitetail Lane in the home she and Sam built in 1970.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Clearwater Conservancy or to Grace Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com or visit us on Facebook.
