Obituary of Helen Louise Hoover

Helen Louise Hoover, 102, of State College, passed peacefully Saturday, October 31, 2015, at Greenhills Village. Born September 5, 1913 in Lincoln Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, she was the middle child of six sisters, daughters of Alvin Joseph and Minnie (Bruner) Ogline. Helen graduated from Somerset High School in 1931. She attended King's School of Oratory in Pittsburgh and received her bachelor's degree in Education from Millersville State Teachers College in 1942. At Millersville she met Norman K. Hoover and they married June 8, 1940 Helen taught elementary school in one room rural school houses in Lancaster and Somerset counties and later in Houserville and Lemont schools. During the war years she was supervisor for the loading and unloading of trains at Letterkenny army depot near Chambersburg. She was a member of the University Women's Club and an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where she contributed to many musical and charitable activities. Helen is survived by her one daughter, Brenda L. Hoover, and her husband, Michael Bathrick, of Millheim; and her sister, Alice Fox of New Oxford. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, on September 15, 2009. Visitation will be from 10 until 11a.m., on Friday, November 6, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church, 205 S. Garner St., State College. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, with the Reverend Scott Schul officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park.
