Our sincere condolences to Alan’s family during this time of grief. We were fortunate to have learned from Alan in various capacities such as his graduate seminars and involvement on the Penn State Family Relationships Project. We were lucky to have shared in his knowledge and wisdom which have shaped our own scholarship.
Sincerely, Aryn Dotterer & Shawn Whiteman

My deepest sympathies to Alan's family who so generously shared him with us. I was a PSU grad student in HDFS when I first met Alan. I consider myself fortunate to have been mentored by Alan who served as a member of my dissertation committee. I will remember Alan as consistently kind, calm, reassuring, warm, genuine, creative, generative, and funny. I will miss him and am grateful for his kindness, wisdom, and humor.

I met Alan when I was a relatively young scholar. I remember how kind he was to me, and how genuine. I benefited from reading his scholarship over the years, and always considered him a role model and friend. He was a good man that I will miss.

I was never able to meet Dr. Booth, however his reputation, work, and legacy made a lasting, continued impact on the institution that employed me for many years (the Bureau of Sociological Research). His professional contributions were greatly appreciated and will continue to have a lasting impact.
My sincere condolences to the Booth family.

I am probably Alan's oldest friend and during our youth, his best friend. We lived across the street from one another and played endless hours and walked to and from school for over ten years and shared secrets and sorrows and many pleasures together - our first time smoking, first time drinking, TAing a high school chemistry course, double dating and so on. Our lives separated when my parents sent me off to another school and our lives expanded and new interests and locations displaced our intimacy.
Nevertheless, his loss is heart-wrenching to me and I am certain that it is as well to those who have filled his life since those early days. My heart goes out to them - you - and hope that you will treasure what you have gained from your association with Alan eventually drowns the current sadness.

Alan was one of the kindest and most generative scholars I have known. Although we were never in the same department, I always considered him one of my mentors, and he played an important role in my career. I will miss him.

Dear Susan and family,
Elizabeth and I offer our most sincere condolences at your loss. We always enjoyed meeting and talking to Alan at "official" Penn State get-togethers of Senate or college business. He led a rich life and I am sure that you will miss him greatly.

I had the privilege of knowing Dr. Booth as a professor during my doctoral studies. He was a member of my dissertation committee until his health prevented him from continuing. He was very kind and supportive of my work, and very encouraging. I was an older student with a lengthy career in social work, and at the end of my course with him he wrote a note on my final paper that it was great to have a person with my experience in the class, as not only the other students benefited, so did he. Please accept my sincere sympathies. There will be only one Alan.

Susan & Andy,
Please accept our deepest condolences concerning the passing of your husband/dad. On Christmas day, Jacintha Bronte Tinkew called and we asked if she had been in touch with Alan recently because we had not seen him at Wegman's as we had come to expect. Today's Obituary page in the CDT supplied the surprising answer.
Alan, undoubtedly, provided outstanding service to the Sociology Department and to the many individual students who worked closely with him. Yet he found the time to devote many hours in paternal devotion to meeting Andy's recreational and other needs. May he proceed without delay to that place of eternal peace and happiness above prepared for us to await the arrival of loved ones we leave to mourn our passing.
We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to share some pleasant times with him.
Sincerely, Roy & Glynis
