Born March 26, 1938, in Conemaugh, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Lillian Salvaggio Carl. On August 25, 1958 in Johnstown, PA, she married Robert Hostetter, Sr., who survives at home.

Harriet graduated from Conemaugh High School in 1956 and from South Hills Business School in 1976. She was a Paralegal for Richard Kalin Law Firm for many years, after which she worked as the secretary to the Department Head of the School of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State University until her retirement. She most recently worked as a part-time receptionist at South Hills School of Business and Technology.
