Peter was my PhD supervisor at Penn State. At a critical moment in my defense, Peter rescued me and turned a possible failure into a successful outcome on the day of my defense. I finished the PhD in June 1968 and went into the US Army for two years (delayed entry for 4 years after finishing the ROTC at Kent State in 1964).
I have had a long successful career as an academic, 1970-2016. I am uncertain what would have happened in my life if Peter had not spoken in my defense on that June day in 1968. I gave a gift of an ice cream maker to Peter later in June; he was surprised and grateful--giving a gift to PhD supervisors still rarely occur. I've supervised quite a few dissertations myself over the years. Very happy about that moment back in 1968.
I graduated in the PhD program in December 1968.
A major purpose of Woodside, Sheth, and Bennett (1977), a book of original essays in consumer and industrial buying behavior, was to honor Peter.

Mary Lou and Family
When I entered the PhD program at Penn State in 1978 Peter Bennett was chairing the department and teaching a doctoral seminar. There were 5 or 6 of us in his seminar and he occasionally held classes at your home. He made a big difference in my career. His class in particular was a wonderful experience--learning and having fun together. I also fondly remember the Friday night happy hours on College Avenue, or at The Tavern --other colleagues and friends would join us and Peter was usually one of the "ring leaders." As he said during one memorable discussion about the Vice-President to my then girl friend, now wife, "I've never been Vice anything." He was a character who lived larger than life. I can envision him now partying with Dave Wilson and all the others in Heaven. I'm pretty sure he will enjoy a leading role there as well.

Dear Mary Lou:
My condolences and deepest feelings of sympathy to you and your family upon the passing of Peter. I learned a ton from Peter as we pursued similar goals for Penn State, and for the Smeal College of Business. He is very definitely a former Penn State colleague and friend whom I shall never forget.
God bless you.
Charlie Smith.

Dear Mary Lou and daughters, Kate and Blythe, Our condolences to you and your family on Peter's passing. His many many contributions to both Penn State University and the State College community were a measure of his concern for others. In particular his service on the University Faculty Senate was long and much appreciated especially his tenure as Chair of the Senate.
We are now living in Naples Florida year-round, so we will not be able to greet you all in person.
