I was just looking through notes given during an Aerospace class Mr. Holl taught. He had a very unique way of teaching, and made things a little fun. He loved using Acronyms for various fluid mechanics methods, which was always humorous. He was a good teacher.

I would like to send my condolences to Dr. Holl's friends and family. He was my high school clarinet teacher, and I still keep and treasure all of the handwritten notes that he made in my notebook during each of my 144 lessons with him. Dr. Holl helped make it possible for me to continue my study of music through the graduate level by giving me a solid foundation in my early clarinet lessons. I still remember fondly my first lesson, in which he taught me to play my clarinet with more relaxation. He instructed me to "play ape woman" by hanging my arms limply at my sides before picking up the clarinet. I always looked forward to my clarinet lessons, and he was a wonderful teacher.

I joined the Keystone Society of Swing as the bass player a few years ago. At first, I was a little intimidated by Bill, but then I got to know his sense of humor and love for music. Bill had some difficulty getting to rehearsals and gigs, but when he started to blow, what a sound it was. Bill has been an inspiration for me as a musician and a person; it has been a privilege to know him and perform with him. My deepest condolences to the Holl family.

It was an extreme honor and privilege to work with Dr. Holl in Aerospace Engineering. He put 100+% of himself into the Director of Graduate Studies (or as he aptly named it "DOGS") position. Dr. Holl made such a a lasting impression on many faculty, students, and staff. He was tremendous professor, administrator, musician, student, storyteller, and most of all friend. His love of his family was very evident. He also loved acronyms and his infamous signature line was "Dr. J. William Holl f.l.a.a. fem" which he translated to me as "first, last, and always... forevermore". How very true. God Bless Dr. Holl. Until we meet again!

Thank you, Dr. Holl. Through the years 1981 to 1983 I would arrive at your house early on Saturday mornings for my saxophone and clarinet lessons, only to discover you had already been up and practicing your instruments for hours. I was honored to have you for a teacher. You were, at all times, both humble and striving, the very model of self discipline. You taught me to how play music and how to work. Thank you for everything. My sincerest condolences to your family.

I never had the opportunity to get to know Bill well. It took almost no time to "get" his humanity. My chief appreciation of Bill was of his musicianship at the UUFCC. Bill is in my life forever and it is a disappointment that I will almost surely be unable to attend his service.

My sincere condolences to Bill's family. I knew him from the School of Music. He was a kind man who always made time for us to talk about our studies in music...I played in Center Dimensions with him when he played bari sax. He was a great musician and man - he will be missed.

I will always remember Dr. Holl (I could never get used to calling him Bill once I hit adulthood) as my most favorite teacher. I took saxophone lessons from him through high school and enjoyed every lesson- I have kept my lesson book and am amazed at the records he kept. It did take a little while to get used to his sense of humor and he could seem gruff, but once you got to know him, you knew he was such a soft-hearted and kind man. The community has lost a wonderful, talented musician. We will all miss him. May you play your music forever in heaven, Dr. Holl!
