I was a childhood friend of Subud and spent many after school afternoons at Subu's house. His mom would make this wonderful bread that would puff up! It was so good and a sheet pan candy she called (Vadam Toffee) good stuff. I loved visiting Subu's house what a beautiful lady she was when she was happily cooking. Precious memories to me.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's more than 50 years since I was a young child living just outside State College, but I have such fond memories of your parents. They were lovely people. My parents, my sisters and I were so fortunate to have known them.
With love,
Sunil

Dr. and Mrs. Vedam welcomed me into her home, after I met Dr. Vedam in a Penn State parking lot, by accident and quickly established some Bangalore connections. I felt like I had a home there. Mrs. Vedam taught me her systematic approach to cooking (I didn't pick up much) and I had such fun driving Dr. Vedam for a hike in the forest on the way to visiting Subu once. Mrs. Vedam was a fearless walkeer, so kind to me, and such an anchor in my life. I knew she created such a musically and culturally rich community around her. I will miss her dearly.

My Memories of Nalini Vedam, wander from her beautiful colored sari's, with her healthy petit frame, to all the lovely, delicious vegetarian meals, and holiday packages with Indian sweets and "pretzels" she would send. Our family really looked forward to these packages, and loved eating them for the next few weeks. Cecil really loved the Carrot with Pistachios desert. Her sharing of the indian ways was very touching for our family. My daughter Larissa made her first Prom Dress with a beautiful orange Sari, that was from Nalini, that she found in Anita's home. Nalini and her family helped give our family cultural enrichment. She will be missed and Anita sends her condolences as well.

I was honored to be part of the Vedam Family in so many ways and on so many occasions – from Vedam and Nalini’s cheery greeting of “Come in! Come in!” to Nalini’s stern admonishments about “the proper way to make…” any of the hundred some dishes she deftly prepared.
She was an excellent conversationalist and defender of what was right, all while questioning herself and engaging her guest. She lived as the person she hoped to be and criticized herself when she fell short. She was forward thinking and embraced the past. And she loved so many of us as kith and kin and criticized those she loved most just as she would have treated herself.
Still, she was one of the strongest people I have known and she knit so many of us together, even when her own world seemed unraveled.
She will be missed.

I was fortunate to meet Nalini not too long ago. She must have been at least 80 years old but to me, she had the charm of a young girl. I loved her and greatly enjoyed her company, and I was looking forward to seeing her again. I will hold her in my memory with great respect and gratitude for her beautiful work in raising the wonderful woman that Saraswathi is. Nalani's teachings and beauty as a human being will continue to be present in her daughter and granddaughters, and all the children that may still come from them will still be touched and nurtured by her strong spirit, her kindness, and the efforts of her life. I celebrate that today, as I sadly wave goodbye to a sweet friend.

Dear Saras and Jeffrey, Subu, andMaya, Zoe, Lakshmi and Sophia,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Your mother, mother-in-law and grandmother put great value, I think, in knowing where the center of things lie, and from there to generate so much care and generosity.
I believe she tried to be at the core of her most immediate family -- the seven of you plus Vedam and herself -- and from there to generate continuously care, protectiveness and sustenance (her "care packages").
And she stayed at the core of the growing Indian community here, also abundantly providing for its needs.
And so she did too, with the larger State College community, of which I am a part.
And for each of these entities, she gave so "easily" and abundantly. She is greatly missed by so many of us here.
At her own core, it was clear to me that she loved you dearly. One of her generosities was to bring each of you into our lives/
With love,
Sandy Lindenbaum

I am so sorry to hear of my friend Nalini's passing. In the heyday of our Wednesday Hiking Group she was regular and steadfast. Eschewing western-style hiking boots and blue jeans, she always wore her beloved saris and sandals even while hiking through wet and rocky Shingletown Gap, or up the steep trail at Colerain Park to "Indian Lookout". She traveled light and got there first. She was as nimble as a mountain goat, and loved the woods and the wild flowers. Nalini showed me my first pink ladyslipper in bloom. Whenever we hike past the spot I look for it again, and it is still there, as are my fond memories of Nalini.
My only regret is that we have been out of touch for the past few years. Now she has slipped away without a farewell. Perhaps it is just as well. I will remember only the good times.
Jean Aron
