I am so fascinated by his contributions to the profession of counseling. I am so sad he left and did not get the chance to meet with him in person. My condolences to his family.

I studied Business Law with Dr. (then Mr.) Herr at Paterson, NJ, Central High School in 1958 or 1959. He was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I have never forgotten him. I hope to see him again some time in Heaven.

Dr. Herr was the Department Head at the time that I entered the Ph..D. program in 1981. He was instrumental in contributing to my completion of the degree. Part of the coursework was the course he taught on Career Counseling. He was encyclopedic in his information about the field. I remember how integral "work" was to his life and identity. I am grateful for his contributions. Though belated because I was out of town at the time, my condolences to his family and friends.

Patricia: I send to you and your family my condolences. I graduated with Ed at Shippensburg in 1955. The obituary was beautifully written. Ed certainly left a great legacy which you and your children can cherish. What an outstanding and humble gentleman! My best to all of you.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Dr. Herr's passing. Ed and I served together on one of the early Board of Directors for the National Board for Certified Counselors. In fact, Ed was one of my references for my Board appointment. Ed was a brilliant scholar and one of the kindest persons I ever had known. I very much valued his professionalism, and especially his friendship. He will be greatly missed.

Chris and family. To lose a great one like your father is immesurably tough stuff. I lost my father and life long golf buddy, Frederick Wood, who also was a contributor to the college of Education at PSU.
I did not know Ed personally but he and his wife raised one hell of a son in Chris. As a graduate of SCHS class of '86 Chris Herr was a great friend of mine during my formative years. I suspect that Chris's character, wit and caring self was a direct reflection of Ed's careful parenting of Chris.
Mad love and "been there" condolences go out to the entire Herr tribe. At 82 all of us should be so lucky to have lived such a full and impactful life as Ed did.

My deepest sympathies for the loss you now feel. I hope your memories provide you solace and in time that you find you can rejoice in the wonderful life. I am grateful to be one of many students whose life was touched by the wisdom and generosity of Ed Herr. I am eternally thankful for the time he spent giving me advice while he was the Associate Dean and I was a graduate student.

I truly count is as a blessing to have gotten to share a table and hear Ed's stories, to sit at a meeting and watch his firm, gentle leadership, and to feel the gift of his humility and friendship.
My heart is both sad and grateful.

I want to express my sympathies to the Herr family at this very difficult time. Those of us who had the opportunity to work with Ed as a professor at Penn State are aware of his unparalleled accomplishments as a scholar and administrator. The long and distinguished career that he had as a counselor educator and the impact that he had on the counseling profession world-wide and students that he worked with directly is something that few of us in academe could ever duplicate. But, for me, what I admired most about Ed was that with all of the accomplishments and well-deserved recognition that he received throughout his career, he remained humble. When you met Ed and got to know him on a personal level, he never once went on about all that he accomplished. He was, however, interested and helping others and, in particular, younger scholars with their career goals. I think the only time that I think I witnessed any discussion of pride was when Ed would talk about his children -- Amber, Chris and Alicia and his very devoted wife, Pat.
I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity that he gave me to work as a faculty member at Penn State and I feel honored to have known Ed throughout my career.

I am so proud to have met & known Ed Herr, who was a great mentor and friend to my husband, Skip Niles. I particularly enjoyed his sense of humor. He was so bright and such a wonderful teacher in so many ways. He will be greatly missed, but never, ever forgotten. Thanks for everything, Ed. My thoughts and prayers are with his beautiful wife, Pat and their wonderful family.
