I met Jim at conferences a couple of times, and I spoke with him on the phone. He seemed to be a very nice and caring professional. I used his agribusiness management textbook in my teaching at Cal Poly Pomona University for many years.
It was with great sadness that I came to find out about his passing. I wish his family and loved ones the best.

We at Purdue Agriculture were very sorry to learn of Jim's passing, He was an alumnus of our College, but also someone I called a mentor, colleague, and friend. While I have not seen him in several years, Jim and I worked together for a long time in the agribusiness management area. I was a new faculty member then, and he helped me connect with the broader community of faculty working on agribusiness issues and I always enjoyed catching up with him, his perspectives, and discussing where we should be going with our agribusiness work. His kindness, gentle demeanor, and insight will be deeply missed. Jay Akridge, Dean, Purdue University College of Agriculture.

I was a fellow student with Jim at Purdue. Those were great years, full of fond memories. I also kept a bit in touch with Jim after he moved to Penn State and know what a terrific asset he was to their teaching program. I remember him as a modest but very talented fellow. A quiet, unassuming fellow who let louder voices get the attention they wanted but who often had more to say. A person of serious intent and purpose but with a touch of the scamp that could sneak up on you. I am sad for his loss.

Jean and family....I just became aware of Jim's untimely death. Although we lost track of one another after I left PSU in 1985, I recall Jim with both tremendous fondness and respect. I remember well when he interviewed for his position at Penn State. He was clearly the superior candidate based on objective credentials. However, I think he would have received the offer even if that were not the case!! I am referring to his enthusiasm, energy, and charm. Those characteristics--plus his intellect, integrity, and commitment--served him well after he joined the faculty and he certainly made a huge impact, especially with students. One thing I remember so well was the ease with which I could disagree with him (which happened on occasion). Regardless of the issue, we could sit down, dig into our strongly held differences and have an incredibly healthy and vibrant exchange. Jim always made clear in his own way that any differences--regardless of how significant--would never affect our mutual respect and friendship. He was, indeed, special and I know how much you will miss him. May he live forever through the memories you hold near and dear.

Dr. Beierlein was a wonderful instructor. His wit and dry humor, combined with the ability to explain any concept clearly, made his classes a pleasure. He was patient with his students, truly dedicated to the Ag Business program at Penn State, and always seemed to enjoy both.
I'll forever remember him teasing me about my giant cup of coffee that I brought to class, and several of his favorite sayings. Looking forward to the day we meet again, Dr. B.... rest easy.

As a Boy Scout leader, Jim was a humble leader who used patience and kindness to instill positive characteristics and skills in Scouts. To this day I can observe those same traits in those young men he mentored.

Some people touch our lives briefly but make an unforgettable impact. Jim was a colleague and friend in the College. He contributed so much professionally, but it was his wit and quiet humor I remember best. I hope it is some small comfort to know others share your loss... Mary Saylor

Jean, Julie, and Jim,
My sincerest condolences. I know that this is a difficult time for you. There is always an empty feeling when you lose a loved one.
I wish that I could get back to State College for the memorial service, but it is impossible on a short notice.
Best wishes to you.
