Obituary of James A. Winck

James "Jim" A. Winck, 74, of Howard, formerly of State College, passed away on July 1, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Mount Nittany Medical Center. He was born on November 25, 1941 in Everett, the son of the late Enos and Grace Dibert Winck. On September 5, 1964, he married the love of his life, Susan Kimmel, who survives at home. A lifelong resident of Centre County, Jim was a 1959 graduate of the State College Area High School, and earned a bachelor of science in Education in 1972, and a Master of Education in Counselor Education in 1977, both from Penn State. Jim served in the Army Reserves 491st Engineering Battalion. He worked as a salesman for Jack Harper's Clothing Store and later for Moyer Jewelers. He joined the Pennsylvania State University, in 1969, as a computer operator/supervisor and then moved to the Division of Undergraduate Studies from 1973-1979. From 1979 to 1981 he served as assistant director in Undergraduate Admissions. In 1981 Jim joined the Office of University Development as assistant director in the Office of Annual Giving. In 1989 he moved to the College of the Liberal Arts as coordinator of the Undergraduate Records Operation and then moved to the Labor and Industrial Relations Department as advisor and assistant to the Dean. Jim retired in January 1995, after 25 years of service at Penn State, to become a Certified Financial Planner with Diversified Asset Planners Inc., where he enjoyed 21 years specializing in personal retirement and estate planning, as well as small business financial planning. Jim was very involved in his community. He was a life time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in State College, and was a member of the Chancel Choir and The Study Group. He also served on Church Council, Trustees, and currently served on the Endowment Investment Committee. Jim was a member of the College Township Park Board, Centre Region Park and Recreation Board, Centre Home Care Board, Meals on Wheels Board of Directors and currently served on the Marion Township Park Board. Jim enjoyed many activities, his favorite was sailing. He was a member of the Outdoor Sportsman's Club and liked spending time hunting with his son. He played racquetball twice a week, for 35 years, with a group of friends at Rec. Hall; he was an avid Penn State football and wrestling fan, seldom missing a home game or meet. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his two children, Timothy Winck and his wife Heather, and Kimberly Winck and her husband, Brian Murphy, all of Bellefonte; a sister, Betty Winck Hassinger, of Tomball, TX; and two nieces, Sally Hassinger Dresch, and her husband, Larry, of Tomball, TX, and Cindy Hassinger Chambers and her husband, David, of Houston, TX. Jim was a loving husband and father. He will be missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be 2-4p.m. and 6-8p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A funeral service for Jim will be held on at 11:00a.m., on Friday July 8, 2016 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 250 E College Ave, State College, with Rev. Greg Milinovich officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Hall Cemetery.
