Fare thee well, old friend. I suspect the environment wherever you are is better for having you in it.

Joe was a real friend to many and will truly be missed. He enjoyed many years volunteering at the Centre Furnace Mansion in the gardens where I met him several years ago, and had many friends there (maybe not the groundhogs). He always took pride in his work, loved having lively conversations, and was an avid seed saver, and would share with anyone who wanted them. Joe would package butterfly weed seeds and sell them at the spring Plant Celebration to benefit the Mansion's gardens. No one left his table without a packet, planting instructions and a tip or two. He inspired many to garden and surely instilled a love of nature and wanderlust in all who knew him. May he continue to have marvelous gardens, natural spaces and grand adventures in his next journey! We will remember him as a good friend.

I did not know Joe personally but recognize and remember him as the person who tended the beautiful flower beds outside the State College Post Office in years past, nurturing them for our visual enjoyment as we entered and exited with our mail. Rest in peace, Joe.

Joe was a great man who humbly contributed more to the quality of life in central Pennsylvania, and beyond, than most people realize. I am grateful for his contributions to making the world around him a better place. No nobler cause can a person fight for. May you rest in peace Joe. You will be missed but not forgotten.
