Dear Liz,
It seems impossible to speak of any consolation in the face of such a great loss . I will always remember Dr. Perez and feel very fortunate to have known him.

It is very saddening to learn about passing away of Dr. J.M. Perez. He took over my graduate research as an advisor at Penn State in 1994, see the picture from back then. I was very happy that he became excited with my thesis topic of renewable lubricants and we had a lot of success. But Dr. Perez really helped me a lot not only in research. He set up an internship, which was a great thing but really took him a lot of effort. He would even drive from PA to IL on his own for some meetings. Sometimes I would go with him and we would both share driving. This would give me plenty time to talk to him and I really enjoyed it. The last time we drove together was in 2011, we went from Penn State to Atlanta and even to Florida. Dr. Perez was very proud of his family and would always ask me about my parents or children. After my graduation in 1997 we kept on communicating not just about research, but also about the family and other common topics. We visited each other homes several times. His mother was Lithuanian, so I was very happy that Dr. Perez visited me in Lithuania in 2009 and saw the country of his ancestors. Now I myself have my own graduate students and I really appreciate that I had Dr. Perez as my mentor and advisor. He will always stay in my memory. Condolences to his family and friends...

Dr. Joe Perez was a mentor of mine for over 20 years. As I was finishing graduate school at Penn State , Dr. Perez stepped in during my final few months in State college after the sudden demise of Dr. Elmer Klaus to shepherd and guide , " the slippery bunch " as he called the tribology graduate students . Over the years he kept the tribology graduate program in Chemical engineering at the Petroleum research laboratory ( PRL ) going, often single handedly, but always with a smile and useful advice for current and past graduate students.
I have fond memories of talking to him over the phone often, meeting him at various conferences and as his health took a toll for the worse, learning from him about strength and grace and how to tackle every challenge as it comes along. I last met him this past May ( just a few months back ) in Las Vegas at STLE conference, where Dr. Perez a very well known entity at such a meeting took the time to attend papers, meet former students and colleagues and continue to inspire everyone he spoke to and spend time with. He was a bastion of knowledge, perennially helpful to his students and colleagues, never seeking the spotlight, but always there when one needed him.
On behalf of "the slippery bunch", I would like to say that today with his passing away, the world has lost a renowned hands on tribologist, with exceptional knowledge and experience and we have lost a wonderful mentor and colleague. My sincere condolences to the entire family. We will miss you, Joe

Dr. Joe Perez was a steadfast and wonderful champion for all things bioenergy. He made my master's degree at Penn State especially relevant to the needs of bioenergy industry. He was a great friend, too, and always had time to chat about the bridge between vegetable oils and biofuels and fluids. And academic life in general.
