I will always be thankful I was able to spend some time with you. Michael would always tell me stories about how you would watch him practice the drums for hours. He became an amazing drummer because of your encouragement, patience and love. He said that you were always proud of him no matter what career path he decided to take. Thank you for immediately welcoming me into the family and I will always cherish our little chats. You were always very kind to me and I will always think of you as family.
Love,
Alexis Vlassis

Dear Jan, I was an undergraduate at Oberlin from 1966-70, and Chris was a significant reason why I became an art major. As part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Allen Memorial Art Museum, art alumni/ae have been invited to present remembrances of our time at Oberlin. It is in that context that I have been assembling my talk, and I discovered Chris's obituary. Please accept my condolences, and pass along my thoughts to the rest of your family. Chris's inclusion of students, his willingness to meet and talk outside of class, his sharing of his work via visits to his studio - all these had such a strong impact on me. I continue to be enriched by my decision to pursue art, and I will be sharing Chris's influence on that in my talk in October. With much love, Reid.

Dear Jan,
I just received your card for the celebration of Chris' life and work -- and of course, I'll come.
I am so sorry I did not get to visit with both of you for quite some time, so it came as a shock to find out Chris had passed away.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences at your loss.
I too miss him.
Love,
Inge

Dear Jan, Michael and Even,
I know this is a really difficult time for you, and I'm thinking of you all. Chris' illness caused him and you to suffer, and yet his presence was also a blessing for us all. His suffering is over. And he remains in our hearts the joyful, alive, always interesting friend that he was. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss.

Chris was a gem. He was an extremely talented artist, and a caring, thoughtful, encouraging, generous, always interesting mentor and friend. I remember when I moved to New York, all wide eyed, I told him I was interested in how people were so different from each other. Chris replied that he was interested in how we were all the same. That conversation stayed with me all these years. I think his take on things is the overridingly important one and what the world needs. Thank you, Chris, for that conversation and wisdom, and many other such moments. You touched my life deeply.

In loving memory of my father who with my mother made me all that I am. He encouraged and supported me to work with my hands to become as handy as I am, practice the drums to become the drummer that I am, learn about computers to become as computer literate as I am, study and read to become an engineer and then a physician, grow my own family and succeed in life overall. Thank you dad!
