Obituary of Edwin M. Poorman
Edwin M. Poorman, 67, of State College, passed Sunday, March 26, 2017, at home surrounded by his wife and two children. He died due to complications of diabetes and kidney failure.
Born April 18, 1949, in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late Willis M. and Frances Melhuish Poorman. On May 18, 1974, in State College, he married Donna Rose Latorre at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, Edwin is survived by two children, Kevin M. Poorman of Denver, CO and Sara M. Poorman, and her fiancé, Jean-Michel Francois, of Denver, CO; sister, Susan Kosick and her husband, Robert, of Leesburg, FL; nephew, Todd Rinehart, his wife, Kara, and their children, Benjamin and Ava, of North Carolina; niece, Emily Rinehart of North Carolina; brother-in-law, Joseph F. Latorre, his wife Diana, and their daughters, Jillian and Miranda, of Honeoye Falls, NY.
Edwin was a 1967 graduate of State College Area High School, lettering in football, wrestling and track and field. He received his bachelor's degree in 1972 from Penn State University in Agricultural Economics. While attending Penn State University, Edwin was a member of the Penn State wrestling team.
In 1972 Edwin began his career working for the Farm Service Agency, followed by becoming a loan officer for Farm Credit. He became a farm tax consultant for Agway Inc. in 1977. After seven years, Edwin founded Horizons Unlimited. He served over 250 farm families while operating his business, assisting them with bookkeeping, tax preparation and financial consulting. His company assisted family farms and businesses in 16 counties throughout central Pennsylvania. Edwin provided onsite advisement to farms and businesses, developing meaningful and long lasting relationships over 32 years of service.
Edwin was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church for 25 years, and of the Philipsburg Elks Club. He was also a member of the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and was an avid supporter of Penn State wrestling. He enjoyed various hunting seasons throughout Pennsylvania, but was especially fond of turkey and deer seasons. A member of numerous wildlife organizations, Edwin hunted elk and mule deer throughout the Rocky Mountain region and Canada, in addition to pursuing whitetail deer in the Mid-West.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 67 Grays Woods Blvd, Port Matilda. A service celebrating Edwin's life will follow at 11:00 a.m., at the church, with Rev. Charles Amershek officiating.
