A day late, a dollar short: Please accept my sincerest condolences as I just became aware that Richard passed away May 17, 2017. He was my platoon commander, USMC TBS Class 3-70 back in 1970. I remember a good man: "Bart" was very attentive to the needs, progress, and success of the young USMC officers in 3rd platoon. I was particularly grateful for the support and encouragement he personally gave me after I broke my jaw and ankle three months into the Basic School course. RIP.

Sorry to be such a late entry but just discover Dicks passing. My deepest sympathies are extended to the family. Dick was my boss and mentor at 4th MEB. I never enjoyed working for anyone as much as I did for him. There are those you must work for and those you want to work for. We all felt fortunate to work for/with Dick. Everyday was a great day to come to the MEB.
If I can ever render any assistance in the future feel free to call on me. It would be an honor.
Most Sincerely
Mark

As a member of Basic School class E Co 5-71, I offer my belated condolences to you and your families. He was a very kind and caring leader of our platoon even when we were screwed up and their were many times he came to bail us out. There were many evenings he walked the halls helping us prior to exams. In '75, I was a Company Commander in recruit training. Capt Bart was the Range Officer for Edison Range. I don't know who was more surprised, me to see he was still a Capt or him that I had made it. We both got a good laugh. I got to call him "BART". The following week he was promoted to Major.
There are two Marine Officers that helped me to become a Marine. My MOI, Maj Long, at OU and Capt Bart at the Basic school.

I was so saddened to learn only very recently of My buddy Dick passing away. Dick was a very, very special person. Dick made you feel so good about everything when you were around him. He made you instantly have a positive mood and he was inspirational and completely genuine. He was a role model for me and I wish I could be just like Dick. I still do. I will never forget my buddy Dick and I will miss him like crazy. I think about Dick with almost every step I take on our golf course. God bless Dick...

I was very close to Dick "LT. B" we called him in VIetnam. I was a Sgt and Platoon Right Guide for 3rd Platoon, India CO. Vietnam 1967-1968. I have the funnest story on how I first met Lt B when he arrived to take over 3rd Platoon in Vietnam. We became very good friends until I left Vietnam in November 1968.. Dick and I were the same age and born in the same year.
We share a lot of laughs together and DIck actually called me one night in Atlanta, GA in 1970 at 1:00 AM in the morning. We chat for long time.
I wish I stayed closer to Dick, good friend and great leader in Vietnam. I will miss him and my prayers are with his the Bartolomea. We will toast Dick at our annual, India Company reunion in San Diego October 5th -8.
If any of the family members would like to attend, please call me. Julie has all the info.

I am deeply sorry to hear the loss of such an amazing man. He was my CCD teacher about 19 years ago and I will never forget that if I'm going to be a bear to be a grizzly, and the poem he shared "the guy in the mirror," which he adapted to "the gal in the mirror" when I questioned the gender specificity of the first version. He once called me one of the most genuine people he had ever met, which makes me laugh to think about all the ways that can be taken but that the way he said it made me value that trait in myself. I've been thinking about reaching out to say "hi" for years now and I'm so sorry I'll never get the chance now. He was one of the most influential teachers I have ever had, he will not be forgotten.

Julie and Family,
Jim and I are heartbroken to hear of Dick's passing. Dick was such a wonderful man and joy to be with. We knew him through our time at Freestone and loved having him there. Even off season, he would come out to walk the course just to be there for enjoyment. And yes, he would still have his Miller Lite after the walk.
He loved to talk about you and your family and all the adventures you have together. He loved life and shared that love with all around him. He couldn't help it.
We were blessed to have known him and he was blessed to be loved by so many around him, most especially his family.
Our deepest sympathy goes to you. He is missed.

To Julie and family:
Please know that Janet and I were sorry to hear about Dick's illness and passing and our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.
I am deeply grateful to your sister Jane for reaching out to me to let me know about his illness and his passing this past week. I have shared the news with my brothers and sisters.
I know you will find comfort through family, friends and memories. Though somewhat younger growing up, I will always remember his humor, his stories and the kindness he showed my parents and all of us at family gatherings. They loved you both and enjoyed your company and hearing from you at Christmas.
Our condolences and love,

What a privilege to have known this wonderful man. A personality that filled your heart and made you a better person.
Our years of knowing Julie and Dick were too brief. The time we spend on this earth should be these type of moments. You always knew what they were thinking and the many smiles we shared were every time we spoke. A joy and a blessing.
Dick loved with his entire heart, mind and soul ... we will feel your absence but know God needed you by his side.
To Julie and the family there are no words to Express the heartbreak. Sending our prayers for yOur comfort.

I had the good fortune to have Col Bart as a mentor during my time at the ROTC unit at Penn State. It was after my first military science class with him that influenced me to change my commission from the Navy to the Marine Corps. After spending 20 years in the Marine Corps myself, I can say without hesitation that he was the finest officer and gentlemen that I ever knew. Several years ago I had the good fortune to spend a day of golf with him (he beat me) and later dinner with him and his wife where we reminisced about our time together those many years ago, our experiences serving, and what the future held for us. I very much enjoyed that day with him and will forever remember his warmth and welcoming nature.
My sincerest sympathies. He influenced a great number of young people to do something greater than themselves and I will forever remember a great man with a great heart.

I'm so thankful that Dick was a part of my college experience. He was an amazing man who never held back his advice, wisdom and appreciation for the younger generation trying to make their way in the world. Anyone who had the pleasure to be in his presence will always remember him as a gracious, straightforward and kind man. May the memories you have of him provide comfort. He will forever be missed but the impact he has had on many will never be forgotten.
