RESUME
The Universe grew me
Out of the mixed bearing-tree
Of hard-working ancestors - Swedish, English, Danish,
(and more): farmers, sailers, soldiers, railroaders and
kitchen-bound women - one, a Native American
Out of beans and biscuits, venison,
wilde blueberries and cider,
Out of the garden of my Endless Toys,
Out of the love and rage of parents,
Father as craftsman,
Mother as teacher,
Out of the poverty, violence, and riches of America,
Out of Maine as a poem and library,
I came and became
An artist who speaks in images to find
And know,
And at last to share
The silences where the heart beats
Its wings against the Light.

I had the privilege of knowing Bill for over 65 years. As a friend he broadened me as a person by sharing the depth of his knowledge and wisdom and beautified my world with his poetry and incredibly beautiful works of art .I would mot be the person I am today if it had not been for Bill.
Thank you, Jeannine, for bringing Bill, along with you, into my life. And thank you Bill,
you will always be remembered with love, affection and admiration.

We enjoyed getting to know Bill as a neighbor. We enjoyed hearing his stories and seeing his art displayed at his home. We only wish that we had had more time to enjoy his company. His one-line cartoons were clever and amusing. He will be missed!

Jeannine;
We were so saddened to hear of Bill's passing and our thoughts are with you. We have so many fond memories of our times together in Winter Harbor at the "Grey Cottage". We will treasure those memories and our shared love of the Downeast coast and it's wealth of artistic inspiration! May the God of all comfort still your heart in this time of loss.
Fondly; William & Priscilla Sommerville

Bill is the photographic hero of my life! I was his student at Penn state 1961-65,and was privileged to get my life career start in photography from his inspiration and teaching. He was not only a brilliant and astute instructor, but also funny as hell while doing it, I remember his
humor and puns to this day, and later during a short photo teaching period of my own(the torch was passed for sure),I passed on to all my photo students the many things, both photographic and philosophical, that I learned from the wonderful years with Bill.He was an incomparable teacher and in later years,as we maintained sporadic contact, still a wonderful mentor and friend to the end.
I can never forget him.
