There are few people I have met who have demonstrated such authentic, genuine bonds with so many great people as Jim did. Having served under him in the Marine Corps, Jim and I connected and continued that friendship for over 17 more years. Throughout that time, we shared many personal stories and business adventures. A mentor and a role model to me, I will miss Jim dearly, but will always remember him for his love of family, pride in his boys, and his loyalty to the Corps, the Scouts and the Country.

I attended C.H.M.A. with Jim. He trained with Scot Robinson and I on setting up the parade field. I believe he replaced me as S-3 on the Battalion Staff. I was very very very fond of Jim and very very very proud of him. He came to 1977 class reunion in 1997 at my home. Lots of Cuban cigars! Lots of good memories rehashed. He visited with my Dad inside and then actually sat holding my mother's hand stroking it as she laid in her hospital bed. I'll always remember him telling her all the fun we were having and telling her she had thrown another awesome homecoming party for her boys, just like all the others that he would always remember. I'm sure I saw her smile and he told me she squeezed his hand. She passed away 2 weeks later. Jim was one of my boys, just cannot believe he's gone so soon.

I wish we could have reconnected, but did not get the chance. He was a fellow student at Castle Heights and I will always remember him fondly. Prayers for the family.

To Jim's Family: From all of us at SAIC who had the pleasure of working with Jim over the years on the MARSOC work and other contracts, we are so very sorry for your loss and are deeply saddened to hear that he's passed away. We all enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Jim and his creativity and vision of how best to support our clients, and of course hearing his crazy adventures. His love for the military and especially the Marines was contagious, and we feel blessed to have been a part of his journey. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Lacey and the SAIC team

Jim's legacy will live on in the youth and adults he touched in his military and scouting life. I met Jim through scouting, he encouraged me by his example to become a more active leader. I will always remember the nights sitting around a campfire, sharing stories. On of my most memorable events occurred during a 50 mile bike ride on the C&O canal when Jim volunteered to have food ready for the bikers. He cooked three turkeys on grills, much to the delight of the boys and the adults. We spent that night in wonder watching a meteor shower. I will always remember Jim for his friendship and inspiration.

What is the measure of a Man?
Most of us have been witness to a unique Man, a man that had a special effect on many people, in several communities.
I have often asked myself this question, “What is the measure of a man?
It seems that we too often measure a man by performance. Performance seems to drive our self-worth and self-image. We are too often evaluated and measured by how we perform in our “chosen profession”. Is our performance superior to others? Then there is the “measure” by our “portfolios”, the cars we drive, the homes we acquire, the way we look. All are useless metrics!
I believe the measure of a man is found within the heart. My friend – your friend – Jim Kuhn’s heart is too big for measure! I could talk for days about the Jim Kuhn. I could tell you stories that you know and some you do not know. I know each of you probably have a “Jim story”. Each story is special.
Jim was a Man of the SOUTH but a Citizen of the WORLD. Jim and I met in college and were best of friends. We both made a decision as young men to join the finest organization together (USMC) to take on a unique challenge and experience to grow as LEADERS of MEN.
Each event and story that I could share of Jim Kuhn would provide the measure of this MAN - the heart and sole of a loving strong man.
We are all unique. Jim was just more unique. He was many things to many people. He was strong, smart, fun, dependable, confident, and consistent.
He was a “man’s” MAN! But even more, he was a friend who cared! This is not a description that one hears in today’s ALPHA MAN world. Jim made sure that the people he touched knew him as a:
• Loving family man.
• A friend to count on – at any time or place.
He was a child of God, who became a Man in God’s image.
So, how do you take the measure of a man? I am certain that Jim Kuhn measured up to the highest standard of his God - my God - our God. We should all hope to measure up to Jim Kuhn. If we can come close, this will be a better “day”. I hope it is a better day, because a great MAN has passed.
Jim is resting – but only for a moment. There are new friends to make in Heaven; young Scouts to be entertained and watched over by Jim; certainly there are “leadership” opportunities for this this MAN in heaven. The Lord has a new Angel Leader!
God has this fine man where he must be needed. We mourn his loss, but measure OURSELVES FORTUNATE TO HAVE KNOWN JIM KUHN.
AMEN!
