Obituary of John Edward Herrington
John E. "Jack " Herrington 90 of Philipsburg died Monday, September 4, 2017 at Windy Hill Village in Philipsburg. Born December 20, 1926 in Osceola he was the son of the late William and Margaret Andrews Herrington. On September 14, 1949, he married the former Clemence Dixon who preceded him in death on July 12, 2016. Jack is survived by three sons John H. "Jay" Herrington and his companion Sherrill of State College, Thomas Edward Herrington and his wife Luahan of Danville, Allen Troy Herrington and his wife Melissa of Philipsburg. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren Jaytee, Wendi, Jaxen, Trentin, Halle, Brenton and Lauren, four great-grandchildren Sawyer, Quinn, Fiona and Claire. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a sister Margaret Peggy Abbott and a brother James Herrington.
Jack was a 1944 graduate of Philipsburg High School where he excelled in sports. He attended Lock Haven University to play football but after one year he enlisted in the U S Army Air Corp and served in the Pacific Theater of Operation eventually finishing WW II stationed in the Philippines. He was well known as the bread man delivering bread for Marhoefer Baking Co serving the mom and pop stores throughout the Moshannon Valley.
Jack was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee and on the Board of Deacons, a 72-year member of Reliance Fire Co #1 and a 60-year member of F & AM Moshannon Lodge #391 both in Philipsburg. He and Clem were charter members of the Mountaineers Club of the National Campers and Hikers Association. They enjoyed camping and traveling and were the proud owners of Tomahawk Pines Lodge and welcomed family and friends to enjoy the lodge every chance that had.
Aside from his wife and family Jack's greatest love was the B.P.O.E Elks Lodge #1173 where he is a 60-year member and it's first and only Honorary Life Member in the lodges136 years of existence. He dedicated his life to the organization on the local, district, state and national level. He joined the lodge in 1957 and immediately went into the officer chairs and became Exalted Ruler in 1964 he served as District State Vice President in 1972 and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 1973. He went on to be Exalted Ruler two more times in 1978 and 1994 and held the office of Treasure and Trustee in both the local lodge and the state association. He leaves a legacy in his lodge that he had been involved in the initiation of more than 2,300 members over his 58 years in the various chairs in the lodge. Nearly every member of his extended family has joined the Elks and his son Jay and grandson Jaxen have both served as Exalted Rulers with Jack proudly installing both of them. All three traveled to the National Convention in Portland in 2009 and they were recognized for having three generations of Exalted Rulers in the family.
Friends will be received at the Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre St., Philipsburg, PA 16866 on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 2 until 4 and 6 until 9. An Elks Memorial Service will be held in the funeral home at 6:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Presquesile and Fifth Street in Philipsburg on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Kathleen Hopper officiating. Burial will be in Philipsburg Cemetery.
