Obituary of Alfred J. Engel

Alfred J. Engel, 90, emeritus professor of chemical engineering at Penn State, died on October 28th, 2017, at Foxdale. Born on March 30, 1927, the son of Harry and Ella Engel, in Munich, Germany, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947, including a year with the occupying forces in Japan. He attended public school in Mt. Vernon, New York, graduated from Cornell University, and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. From 1959 to 1991 he was on the faculty of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Penn State, where he won awards for research, teaching, and advising, became a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and was active in recruiting diverse faculty members to the Department.

He was preceded in death by Trudie Engel, his wife of 63 years, and is survived by his four sons and families: Jonathan Engel, his wife Meryl Kanfer and son Jacob, Peter Engel, his wife Dina Michels and children Ruth and Sam, Stephen Engel, his wife Traci Mann and sons Ben and Jonah, and Kenneth Engel, his wife Caroline Banton and sons Rees and Haryn.
