I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. French. He was an encouraging and dedicated academic advisor who remained interested in the experiences and careers of his students. Even though I graduated from the program in 1998, we remained in contact until this fall. He was extremely patient with students and had a very sophisticated sense of humor that made the challenging tasks and rewrites less difficult. He was a great mentor, friend and professional advisor and I miss being able to communicate with him regarding professional activities.

Jim,
I finally got around to reading this and your father was a great guy. I'll definitely be at the funeral this weekend in there is even any room for me! It sounds like he was a beloved man and that is a sign of a life well-lived.
Sending all my love to you and your family. There is nothing that hurts more than loss and I'm right here feeling that pain with you.

I always enjoyed going to the French's home to fix things and chat. Many interesting conversations with Joe that were both enlightening and entertaining.
Sad to see him go. He was a great man!
I'll miss him.

Dr. French was a wonderful advisor, friend and role model. I learned much about life and School Psychology from him. In truth, I had no idea who he was when I began the doctoral program in 1988, but I quickly grew to feel very fortunate to have chosen PSU, where I was able to learn from and work with him in our close department where many great friendships and professional connections were formed under his guidance. I will miss his holiday updates and "spasmodicals" (department newsletters) and will carry many good memories of him and his teachings with me.

My daughter, Jennifer, was in the doctoral program for psychology at Penn State and thought the world of Dr. French. He was caring and encouraging as she worked on her dissertation and remained on her committee even after he retired to see her receive her PhD. My husband and I, as well as Jennifer, were saddened to hear of Dr. French's death. Our deepest sympathy to your family.

Dear family,
Christopher told me about Joe's passing. I am so sorry. I remember Joe visiting Christopher and Jeffery in Jeff's final days. Joe bathed his son, he showed so much love, even as his own heart was breaking. I have never forgotten that. It was a father and son Pieta.
I will always be grateful for Joe and Peg's support of Jeff and Christopher, even during the darkest days. Parents from that era who actively supported gay sons? Those folks are golden. Absolutely golden.
Blessings to all from Lake Edge United Church of Christ in Madison, WI. Peace, Amy

Joe was good friends with my dad, Barney, at the Village at Penn State. They used to have daily coffee together upstairs in the Creamery Lounge after morning exercise class. Joe was one of several friends who got up to the podium to speak at my dad's memorial service on November 17th. I could see that it was difficult, and he used a cane, and waited patiently up front for his turn to speak. I really admire him for that. Obviously it was hard for him to get around, but I could see how much it meant to him to honor my dad like that. My last visit with Joe was at lunch at the Atrium, and his mind seemed a bit distant and preoccupied that day. Nonetheless, he was quite pleasant and showed great interest in my mom Emily (also at the Atrium) as well as my husband Ken and me. We had the pleasure of meeting Gary that day. I remember thinking how nice it was for a son-in-law to come visit his father-in-law. Joe will be greatly missed. He was a kind, gentle soul, and he left the world a better place by spreading kindness and helping others. Sincerely, Cindy McCormick Miceli

Your dead will live. My corpses will rise up. Awake and shout joyfully, You residents in the dust! For your dew is as the dew of the morning. And the earth will let those powerless in death come to life. (Isaiah 26:19) This prophecy tells us that one day we will see our dead loved ones again in a new world! Please seek jehovah god to see his promises fulfilled....
