I met Tole when I first came to Caltech to give a talk during the Spring term of 1988 (at which time I was at the MSRI in Berkeley), and I remember him as a very warm, smart, polite and inquisitive person, eager to talk about many things including, of course Lie groups, which was a common subject of interest to us. I joined the faculty at Caltech that Fall and interacted mathematically and otherwise with him (and Sveta), and it was truly enjoyable to discuss with him and learn his point of view. It was a real loss when he left Caltech for Penn State a few years later. I met him rarely after that, but whenever we did meet, his kindness and enthusiasm came through. I feel blessed to have know him. He will be missed, I am sure.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Tolya. My deepest condolences to you and your family
I met Tolya a few years after my Ph.D. At the time I really knew almost nothing about dynamical systems. I learned a great deal from Tolya in those years, and he helped me gain a foothold in the subject. As time passed, I always had the greatest admiration for the significance of his work and his ability to share his knowledge with others. I was honored to participate in his 65th birthday celebration in Paris.
The loss of Tolya will be deeply felt in the mathematics community and of course most of all by you and your family.
