I just found about the passing of Dr. Shenk last night. I was saddened to hear the news, but know that he is in a better place now. I worked closely with Dr. Shenk from 1995-2005 as a software developer for many of his projects, including WinISI, RINA and ISIscan. I always admired his willingness to tackle new ideas and to challenge conventional thinking. He was very passionate about his work, and his enthusiasm was contagious. He was also a dear friend. I miss him very much, and will always think fondly of the years I worked for him.

One of the giants of NIR has gone and he will be greatly missed. The memory that will stay with me is the friendly smile that would precede his telling me I had something completely wrong. The NIR world will be less fun without John to argue with. My deepest sympathies to his family at this time. Tom

Dear Gloria and all the Shenk family, Please accept my sincere and deep condolences. I first met John more than 25 years ago in Braunschweig/Germany. Our most recent meeting was 2010 in Padova/Italy, and at these and several other occasions in the years between I have been very fortunate to be in touch with such an excellent scientist and teacher and an outstanding personality. In Australia 1994, sitting together on a rock at Loch Ard Gorge we had one of the most inspiring discussions of my life. Thank you, John, we will never forget you.

The Italian Society for Near Infrared Spectroscopy expresses profound sadness for the loss of Dr. John S. Shenk. He has been a pioneer in Near Infrared Spectroscopy, an exceptional teacher and point of reference for many of our associates. We all remember his passion and dedication in continuously developing new approaches and new ideas to make NIR spectroscopy a technique easily accessible to a wide range of operators, greatly contributing to the diffusion of NIR. Furthermore we always appreciated his human sense of sharing with young scientists his knowledge and receiving in his laboratories well known scientists as well as beginners. The Italian Society of NIR Infra Red Spectroscopy expresses sincere condolence to his wife Gloria, their son John and daughters Mary, Cindy and Sue.

John was never boring and always illuminating (pardon the pun). He was, in the truest sense of the world, a great teacher. My deepest sympathies to Gloria and family.

My most sincere and heartfelt sympathy goes out to Gloria and family. Johns work influenced a generation of scientists. He gave his time so freely and asked for nothing in return. Like everyone who knew John I valued the advice and knowledge he imparted in the brief time I spent with him. Being with John was not only educational, it was fun. John was a unique character; he will be sorely missed but his passion for NIR will live on in everyone he has inspired.

My most sincere and deepest condolences to Gloria and the Shenk family. I have known John for over 20 years as a student, disciple, evangelist and colleague. Dr. John Shenk will be missed by me. I admired Dr. Shenk because of his great "Christian Values" that he exhibited in his daily walk with his Lord. He was an honest, caring businessman who treated people just like he wanted to be treated. He was an interesting man to talk with discussing one of his passions of developing new calibrations formats for NIR insturements. He was a great help to me in my career of selling NIR instrumentation by making easy to use software for my customer base in a very hard application of forage testing. John, you are with our Lord now in heaven and thank you "for making your mark in my life".

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts are with your family during this difficult time. John was always an inspriation to me in my career with his passion for science and helping farmers and agriculture. He was always thinking of how to improve and innovate. I first met John when I worked for him as an undergraduate in 1979 and when I showed up for work without a pen one day...he told me "thats like a carpenter coming to work without a hammer" and I have remembered that and the need to be prepared ever since. I last saw John at Ag Progress Days..still with the same passion. His spirit of enthusiasm and passion will live on with me always.
