Obituary of Adrian Jan Dykhuis
Adrian Jan Dykhuis, 74, of State College, Pennsylvania, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia, died July 14, 2018, after a long and valiant struggle with prostate cancer and complications from treatment.
Jan is the son of Adrian Dykhuis and Gertrude Holtzer Dykhuis, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Sally Dykhuis Brewer, his daughter Lauren Dykhuis of Alexandria, VA, his step-daughter Meg (Will) Cole of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by his brother Peter (Carrie) Dykhuis his nephews Eric and Graham of Raleigh, NC and extended family members in the The Netherlands and Switzerland. His first marriage to Wanda Kleinsmith ended in divorce.
Born August 20, 1943 in Huntington, NY, he graduated from Syracuse University, class of 1965, where he majored in Political Science. He later earned a Masters Degree from Central Michigan University and joined the Air Force. He joined the Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a weapons system analyst for the Department of Defense, insuring that new systems were cost-effective and safe for soldiers. He retired in 2009.
Jan became an avid Nittany Lion fan, whose loyalties were tested only if the opponent was Syracuse. Jan was a gifted gardener who turned his College Heights yard into a virtual Arboretum. He was a tech junkie who managed to keep up with the latest gadgets such as wireless speakers, a robotic lawnmower, and drones.
Life celebration services will be held later. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Penn State Arboretum.
The family would like to thank Dr. Nancy Dawson of Medstar Georgetown University Hospital;
Drs. Edward Balaban, Sean O'Donnell, Veeral Patel, Jerome Derdel, Christopher Yingling and Kristen Grine of State College, PA for their caring treatment of Jan.
