Obituary of Charles B. Engle

Charles B. "Chip" Engle, 84, of Princeton, New Jersey, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center in Plainsboro, New Jersey, after being placed in hospice care following a battle with cancer. He was born August 4, 1933 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, the only child of Charles A.. "Rip" Engle and Mary W. "Sunny" (Broughton) Engle. After going to elementary school in Waynesboro where his father was a very successful high school football coach, Chip moved to the Pawtucket/Providence, Rhode Island area when his father took a football coaching position at Brown University in 1942. He then moved to State College, PA for his later high school years when Rip took the head football coaching job at Penn State. He graduated in 1952 from State College Area High School, where he was a member of the football team. Chip graduated from Penn State in 1956 and was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Navy after college, attending officer command school at Pensacola, Florida.

He married Marlene "DeDe" Decker Engle of Mansfield, Pennsylvania in November of 1958. After living in Kingston, Pennsylvania and New York City, Chip and DeDe moved back to State College and had twin boys David D. Engle and Daniel B. Engle while living in Park Forest. Chip took a job with the Hedstrom Corporation in Bedford, Pennsylvania in 1968 and raised his family there. He lived in Bedford from 1968 to 1996. While in Bedford, after working at Hedstrom, he owned and operated C.B. Engle's clothing store. He was involved in the Big Brother Program for many years. He helped found the Bedford Area United Way and was its first President. He helped found the Bedford County Penn State Club and was its first President. He was active in the Bedford Area Little League and served two terms as President. He was a member of the Bedford Elks Club and Cumberland Country Club.

In 1995, Chip moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina while also maintaining a condominium at Thoroughbred Crossing in State College. In Hilton Head, he was a member of Dolphin Head Golf Club, the Hilton Head Plantation Yacht Club, and the Country Club of Hilton Head. He was a four term member of the Board of Directors of the Commodore Condominium Association. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and the President of the Village North Dock Association beginning in 1997. Chip loved golf and sailing, and he owned a sail boat (a 38-foot Beneteau) which he purchased in 1990. He sailed his boat "Lucky Lion" from Tortola BVI to Hilton Head in 1995 and only recently sold his beloved boat.

Chip was divorced from DeDe Engle in 1999 after over 40 years of marriage. His loving companion from 1999 until his death was Marcelle Marchand, who survives in Princeton. Prior to his passing, they had purchased a home in Estero, Florida after moving from Hilton Head.

In addition to Marcelle Marchand, he is survived by two children: David D. Engle (Jill) of State College, PA and Daniel B. Engle (companion Beth Harris) of Mechanicsburg, PA. He is survived by two grandchildren, David M. Engle of State College and Michael W. Engle of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

A visitation will be held from 5until 7 p.m., on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College.

A memorial service will be held at 11a.m., on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College.

Burial will be in Spring Creek Presbyterian Cemetery.
