Obituary of Donald Lee Powars
Donald Lee Powars, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on Saturday, September 15, 2018 in Boalsburg, PA. His wife, Darleen, predeceased him last year. He is survived by his two children, Jefferson Frank Powars, of Washington Terrace, Utah and Eve Diane Powars-Bahr, of Boalsburg, PA. He also has three wonderful grandchildren, Michael Powars, CJ Bahr and Dieter Bahr.
Donald's life was centered around service. He was an Officer in the United States Navy, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Three Air Medals, a Letter of Commendation with Combat Distinguishing Device and a United Nations Ribbon. Following his active service, he remained in the USN Reserve, mostly based at Los Alamitos Naval Air Station, Los Alamitos, California.
Donald graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor's degree in History and went on to USC Law School. He opened a law practice with his long-time law partner, John Tretheway and they formed Powars and Tretheway, Attorneys at Law, in Compton, California before moving their permanent practice to Long Beach, California.
His service to the community continued as he was raising a family. Not only did he serve the community as a lawyer, teacher and coach, he was always involved in local legal and philanthropic associations. He served on multiple boards and became President of numerous associations. He was also a past President of Virginia County Club in Long Beach.
With all the service he rendered to the community, there was none more important than the service he gave to his family. His family was his primary mission in life. He spent thousands of hours coaching and following Jeff and Eve to all sorts of athletic events. It did not matter what or where, he was there for all. His love of service, competition and family carried over to all who came in contact with him.
Donald will be interred with his beloved wife Darleen at Forrest Law Mortuary in Long Beach. There will be a private interment service for family only. A reception for all family and friends will be held at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, California on October 26, 2018 from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago IL, 60601, or https://www.alz.org.
