I have known Chuck since our youth when Jean introduced us. Our friendship has been one of correspondence as we lived geographically far apart. I will particularly cherish the brief in person time we had to recall many memories just last summer. Chuck was even talking about writing another book. It's a great loss of a most loyal and interesting individual.

I have often thought about how fortunate I was to have taken a pair of undergrad classes from Dr. Ameringer during his long and distinguished tenure in State College. The man had an encyclopedic knowledge of Latin American history and U.S. Foreign Intelligence and the ability to convey that information in a passionate and engaging manner. He was also one of the nicest, most accessible and encouraging professors that I have known. I will forever be indebted to him for writing one of of my references for graduate school. Vaya con Dios, Professor A.

Carl, Gary and I want to express our condolences to you and your family. I'm sure you don't remember but when you were in high school and college, you would come with Maureen (whose last name I have forgotten) to babysit our children, Susan and David. We lived in Nittany Gardens.
We loved Maureen and considered you a fine young man. We were always glad to see you both and felt assured that our two children were in good hands.
Sending our thoughts and prayers.
Ann and Gary

Charles reached out to me several years ago, writer-to-writer, to exchange perspectives on creative writing. Over time, this led to exchanges on world affairs. I valued his insights into current events, particularly relating to Latin America. I also valued Charles's wit as much as his deep knowledge. I look to Charles as a model of aging gracefully. He kept his vibrant mind going full throttle till the final chapter of his full and interesting life. RIP Chuck.

Charles was a regular at the Penn State golf courses, even this past season. He had a regular tee-time and I always enjoyed getting him started at 12:50 for nine holes on the Blue course. He'll be missed.

When Chuck and Teddy joined our West Two, Fifth Floor "neighborhood" here at the Village at Penn State, he was slow to warm to our welcome. But we are a special bunch of folks, we don't give up on anyone. Within a month of engaging him and his beloved doggie as they came and went for their frequent "relief walks," we learned more about Chuck and his interests. By the time of our 2018 New Year's Block Party, Chuck was "one of the gang." I invited him to speak to my book club as the visiting author of his book, "The Old Spook"...it was the best session for our group for the entire year. Chuck and I had some common events in our professional careers, and we shared our private experiences as true colleagues.
There were some sad days when Teddy took his final nap, but now with Chuck's passing, there is a void that will be hard to fill in the social network of The Penthouse floor in West Two. Farewell friend....

My condolences to the family from a long-time friend and colleague, Chuck was ever a positive, smiling individual with whom I shared many a conversation on Latin America, both in person and at meetings.
I remember him fondly.
R.I.P., Chuck.
