I’m sorry that I didn’t see this sooner, and hope that it isn’t too late to share some memories of Janet. I knew Janet at the NIH (NIAAA) in the 1990’s – early 2000’s, mainly after her retirement. A group of us would eat lunch together, outdoors whenever possible, and it was always a highlight when Janet would show up to join us. Her stories and lively conversations with Bud Veech were endlessly entertaining (they get my vote for the two most interesting people I’ve ever met). Janet and I also often solved the Washington Post (and sometimes the NY Times) crossword puzzles together, providing me with memories I’ll always cherish. When I moved on from the NIH in 2003, she gave me a book of NY Times crossword puzzles, which I solved long ago, but which I can’t see myself ever throwing away. Janet was one of a kind. I had tremendous admiration and affection for her, and I’ve been missing her for a long time. I’m very sorry for your loss, and would like to offer my sincere condolences.

What a wonderful life your Mother lived. Her memory will always live on. I too am from Crosby Minnesota. Her name was mentioned by a few Crosby people on Facebook and a photo of the book she wrote. It is in the Hallett Library. My Father is mentioned in the book.

Dear Sarah, Polly & Rebecca: my condoleances for the loss of your mom. I had the pleasure to meet her the first time in her house in DC where I crushed with Sarah & 3 friends from Kenya. Your mom knowing we appreciate fine dining prepared a Pekin Duck with all the trimmings!! The dinner experience was a fiest of all our senses, her deeply interesting conversation & witty sense of humor icing on the cake!! My subsequent visits were as much fun, especially when I did all of Sarah’s wedding floral arrangements under her way chful eyes ;) I was star struck meeting such an accomplished scientist of her generation at a time where I was still one of the few femal engineers even in the USA! Much love for you three. I appreciate how comprehensively you represented her thry her eulogy.

Never having seen a photo of young Janet, before, I'm impressed by what an incredibly beautiful and confident-looking woman she was. I'm also more than impressed, learning about her background, at what she accomplished in her life. I'm so very glad that I had a chance to meet her--even in her 90s, she was a very interesting person. Rebecca, I'm glad also that she was able to live near you in her last years--must have been a big comfort to her. My thoughts are very much with you and your whole family right now.
