Obituary of Leila Pearl Martin

Leila Pearl Martin (Stiefel), 97 passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 at The Village at Penn State, State College PA where she had been a resident for a number of years. Born in Eldred, PA to Merton Earl and Leila Grace Wood (Regan), she was the oldest of six children. Pearl graduated from Bradford High School, attended nursing school for a brief period of time, but then decided on a career in cosmetology. After marrying her high school sweetheart (Francis H. Stiefel), following his service in WWII, they lived in Niagara Falls NY and North Tonawanda NY for over 25 years. When her husband was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she became a caregiver for over 20 years in addition to her other responsibilities as mother and primary wage earner. Widowed in her fifties, she was married for a second time to James W. Martin and retired with him to a community in Palmetto, Fla. until his death in 1996. In 2004 Pearl moved to State College with her companion, John Francis Kaufmann where they were committed to helping each other with the challenges inherent in the aging process. Pearl touched many lives with her indomitable spirit, infectious joy, beautiful smile and lovingly crafted gifts. She had a lifelong appreciation for music and loved to hear or read a great story.

The family is grateful for the care and kindness she received from personnel during her stay at the Atrium.

Surviving are one son, Richard W. Stiefel of Sarasota Fla., and two daughters, Nancy I. Henry of State College, PA. and Diane L. Croff of Rock Springs, Wyo. Additional survivors include four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Interment will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lewis Run., PA. A private graveside celebration of her life will be held at that time.

The family requests memorials be made to The Multiple Sclerosis Society of America or The Lupus Foundation of America.
