I wish to express my deepest condolences.
Fuqing is a highly respected talent in his generation. There is no need for me to repeat all the great achievements and honors Fuqing had. Fuqing is also a wonderful senior friend to many of the younger scientists (including me). He influenced many of us and will be kept in our hearts.
I first met Fuqing at the Northeast tropical meteorology workshop at the summer of 2009. I was deeply impressed by his sharp insights and sincere passions during the questions and discussions. He is very energetic and like a restless warrior challenging hard sciences questions. He played table tennis, darts, and poker with a group of phd students, including me, Allison Wing, and Ming Zhao, one night at the workshop, by which I knew he is very approachable and friendly to younger ones. After that, I met and discussed with Fuqing at conferences, workshops, academic visits from time to time. He showed me a role model of being a great scientist. Our last meet was just two months ago at the end of May 2019, at the climate symposium and the meso-scale meteorology summer school. He stayed about 10 days at our department, giving several long lectures for the summer school. During a lunch conversation, he joked that he gave more classes and lectures in China, without pay, than he gave in PSU. We laughed and said we should honor him a guest faculty position.
It was a totally shock when I heard the sadly news about Fuqing. It sounded so unrealistic that I couldn't believe it.
The science community lost a significant person; we lost a good friend.

Fuqing was a generational talent in the field of atmospheric science and equally a wonderful human being. I had the good fortune to collaborate with Fuqing in the past and always enjoyed meeting him at various conferences and other professional settings. I will greatly miss seeing him in the future. He is admired by so many in our field, for not only his accomplishments, but also his enthusiasm and passion that he shared freely with others. He will continue to be an inspiration to me and likely so many others on how to be both a good scientist and also a good human being.

Fuqing was an indefatigable force in the Meteorology Department, and a great man. He was on my doctoral committee, and I remember fondly his willingness to chat with me about my research and his helpful advice. For Fuqing, meeting was not a burden. I will never forget his eagerness to ask a question to every Wednesday colloquium speaker, no matter what topic. Originally, I thought that Fuqing just wanted to get a word in, but now I know that he was genuinely curious about all these different topics,a trait that made him a world-class scientist.
Just this year, I mentioned to Fuqing that I work remotely from Maryland and sometimes travel to Penn State, and without prompting he offered to contact a University of Maryland colleague to get me desk space there. I also remember with joy his eagerness to get me to play volleyball at the 2017 cyclone workshop, and his zeal for the game.
May we all try to live with Fuqing's curious spirit, desire to help others, and passion for what he loved.

To Fuqing's lovely wife and two amazing children,
I am so sorry for your tragic loss. I was one of Fuqing's students from 2009 to 2015. During that period, even as his research group and work responsibilities continued to grow, he would always make as much time as he could for his family. You were his true pride and joy.
Fuqing treated his students and colleagues like family, and it was always a treat to celebrate Chinese New Year at your house. Fuqing was a major positive influence in my professional and personal growth, and I am very sad that I was not able to attend his memorial service.
Fuqing ended his e-mails with the word "Cheers" before signing his name. This is obviously not a time of cheers in your lives, but nevertheless is worth mentioning because "cheers" truly embodied his personality -- happiness and optimism.

得知Fuqing Zhang教授离世的消息， 无比震惊和意外，确信之后更是无法相信，眼泪瞬间夺眶而出。
跟Fuqing教授只是见过几面，但是每一次聊天都受益匪浅。 尤其是开始做data assimilation之后，17年他参加我们中心的活动，给了我一些特别好的建议，去年AGU在我的poster前和他聊天， 他还鼓励我去申请学校的faculty，说不try就永远没机会。没想到就是最后一面了。
科研界其实牛人很多， 华人科学家有多难每一个做学术的人心里都有数，但是他在充满挑战的学术届做到了极致。 他对后辈的亲切鼓励，他做学术的机敏严谨，他的真诚和自律，永远都是我学习的榜样。
人短短的一生，才华和精神才是能永恒的吧。 Rest In Peace.

My condolences to the family and friends of Fuqing (aka 'Frank' among soccer fans). I got to know Fuqing because of our love of soccer. I spent many hours with him on Penn State's West Fields as well as on the fields behind State College Highschool. Fuqing was a prolific striker with a nose for goals. He would surprise you with acrobatic 'kung-fu' kicks that were pretty amazing. I got to appreciate Fuqing's gentle nature and acceptance of people of other cultures. He invited me to join a Chinese group with whom I had a lot of fun. He was a peace maker. It is hard to believe he passed away because I still played soccer with him a few weeks ago. I will dearly miss his presence on the soccer pitch.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Fuqing. Fuqing was my postdoctoral advisor at PSU from 2010-2012, and he played an integral role in my development as a scientist. He cared deeply about everyone in his research group, and treated us like a family.
We continued to collaborate after I left PSU, and a few years ago, Fuqing invited me to visit Nanjing University with him to lecture at a summer school, an opportunity for which I am grateful. I could see just how respected and loved Fuqing was by the research community in China.
It is well known that Fuqing was a prolific writer, but I would like to share a brief story that I think helps convey what a truly unique scientist that Fuqing was. One afternoon when I was working at PSU, Fuqing came to my office excitedly to tell me that he had written a paper the previous night. Not finished writing a paper, but completed it entirely in one evening! Then he casually mentioned that he had also attended a dinner party the same night. For anyone else, I wouldn’t believe this accomplishment was physically possible. But Fuqing could do it.
Fuqing would often emphasize to me the importance of “telling a story” with a presentation or paper. I didn’t quite get it at first, but with time, I came to realize that he was right, and I strive to follow this valuable lesson that he taught me. I hope we can all keep Fuqing’s memory alive by continuing to tell his story.

从来没有像现在这样希望时光能倒流！10年前，我何其幸运，遇到了您这样的好老师，您改变了我的人生轨迹，让我更自信的前行。看着张张照片上您的招牌笑容，总感觉耳边又传来了您爽朗的笑声，下一刻您就会问我：“你怎么样？”。之前每次听到您这样问，我都很忐忑，总感觉工作进展太慢，好对不起您。工作是我自己的啊，可是您对我的工作进展和规划远比我自己还上心。 2016年夏，您在北京，对我说：“好想去看看你的女儿们，可惜我太忙了，抽不出时间”，语气中满是遗憾。我知道，您不是敷衍我，因为多年来，您一直在真诚的关心我，默默的帮助我，无论工作还是生活。

I am so proud to be your student. Thank you for training and mentoring me to become an independent scientist, for caring about my life and future. I was uncertain about what to do with research and life in general, and often get stuck in the rabbit holes. Your passion and curiosity changed my attitude and reshaped my career path. 惊闻噩耗，深感震惊、悲痛、惋惜。消息传来之后，我搜寻了照片，却未发现与张老师的单独照片，只有在多年前的一张合影。十余年前，民航气象部门预报人员受张老师邀请到美国PSU学习访问。学习期间，在气象发展前沿阵地张老师深入浅出，给予细致讲解、耐心指导，晚上都抽空给我们讲课，在生活上悉心照顾。讲课之余还挤时间带领我们参观了解美国WFO气象业务，我们不仅解了美国航空气象业务和系统，同时在科研和业务能力等方面有了大幅度的提升，也与张老师结下了深厚友谊。后来多次参加国内张老师的学习研讨班，每次都受益良多。张老师到访我们中心给我们的气象业务给予诸多指导，在气象雷达方面和飞机气象报告数据处理等方面，至今记忆犹新。我们为张老师对国内人才培养所做出的突出贡献表示诚挚感谢，为失去这样一位导师和挚友深感悲痛。张老师对待科学的热情永远激励着我们！

I am shocked and saddened by this news. I first met Fuqing in 1998 at North Carolina State University. He taught me how to run MM5, which we both used to conduct several experiments on the January 24, 2000 “surprise” snow storm. Steve Saleeby, myself, and a few others started in the lab at the same time, and Fuqing took us under his wing. He was a great mentor, and so full of positive energy. He loved to question everything, but he always did it with such a huge smile. His enthusiasm for modeling, combined with his eagerness to engage anyone on the subject, has most certainly defined many careers in our field, mine included. Over the last few months, Fuqing had been helping me develop a community model strategy for FV3. It still has not sunk in that I won’t have another voicemail from him asking me if I had considered something followed by laughter. I always knew when we would speak, I would walk away feeling encouraged. The void Fuqing leaves behind will never be filled, but memories of his laugh and smile will live on forever. My deepest condolences go out to the Zhang family.

It's been almost one year since I have been Fuqing's student. Although he was quite busy during the past year, he was always trying to help me to be a qualified scientist. He gave me a lot of advice about my research, career and work ethics which he has always exemplified. I was deeply impressed by his passion and sincerity towards work and life. He could always find the exact solutions for the questions I had and guided me through all the difficulties. Just the past June, he let me borrow two textbooks about gravity waves. Now I don't have the chance to return them, but they can inspire me when I have questions on my research in the future like Fuqing is still mentoring me by my side as always.
Thank you Fuqing for what you have contributed and accomplished for your students, friends, family and science. You will always be missed in my life.

It is with the deepest shock and regret to hear of the sudden tragic passing of Fuqing Zhang a few days ago. He was one of the greatest and most innovative leaders in the field of atmospheric science. As his doctoral advisor at North Carolina State University and long-time collaborator and colleague in the study of gravity waves, I truly will miss his enthusiasm, ingenuity, energy and drive, and that forever smile that both cheered everyone around him and motivated them to exert their utmost in pursuance of their life's work. I knew from the very first day when I began to mentor him as he had just left Nanjing University that there was something very special about Fuqing, and over time I have seen him grow and flourish to unimaginable heights of scientific achievement and honorary recognition.
It is very ironic that the Funeral Home where the service will be held bears my last name. I am sad that I cannot attend that service, but my thoughts will be there.

In the past several days, when I saw clouds in the sky, I saw Fuqing. I might subconsciously tell my wife “Fuqing did studies of clouds”.
This was a tremendous shock. I became totally speechless when the bad news was confirmed last Saturday. I wouldn't be able to see Fuqing anymore.
Fuqing was a very good friend, colleague, mentor, and collaborator. I wouldn't forget his smile. We just discussed our manuscript a couple of weeks ago. And I just presented our research at his superb group meeting this May. He even invited me to continue doing research as a member at his research center after next year. But I won't be able to see Fuqing anymore.
He always encouraged me to do excellent science. He provided me many opportunities to know other colleagues and gave me chances to present my work. With extreme patience, he taught me the principles of data assimilation from zero. But I won't be able to enjoy these from Fuqing anymore.
Fuqing, an excellent scientist also from China, was my "idol". I thought I could succeed here like him. A real success Fuqing enjoyed included a warm family, lovely and talented children, excellent research, a huge contribution to society and community, a superb research group, many talented students, postdoc, research assistant professors, countless honors, and more. But this idol left me forever.
My deepest condolences to all of Fuquing's family. I am also a husband and father, I can never image the sadness of Fuqing's family. You should feel proud of Fuqing because he was the best husband, father, and scientist!
Yes, Fuqing doesn't go away, he is in the sky.

My most vivid memory of Fuqing was that during a class, he darted from wherever he was sitting to the front of the room, trying to catch a little mouse (which appeared out-of-nowhere) using his own hands, and the laughter and chaos that ensued… But seriously, the episode is telling of Fuqing – always ready to help, and never hesitating when taking on challenges, sometime even impossible challenges (for example, we all know that mouse moves much faster than human!). Fuqing knew early on what he wanted to do with his life, when most other college students were clueless. He was full of energy, eager to learn, an optimist at heart, and always carried a grin that is contagious. To those of us who had the good fortune of studying and playing alongside Fuqing for four years on a university campus, it is no surprise at all what he grew to be – a renowned international leader in his field of research; an educator and mentor who not only taught textbook knowledges but also gave real life and career advices; a beloved father and husband… Even more extraordinarily, through all his success, he remained humble, grounded, and was always generous with his time. Dear Fuqing, thanks for being a friend; we will miss you so terribly!

I would send my deepest condolences. In recent years I worked with Fuqing on on the predictability of the atmosphere. The entusiasm and energy Fuqing injected in the research made me to work a little bit harder, and reach higher. I first met Fuqing in Monterey, CA, in 2007, when he was on sabbatical and I was a postdoc in NPS. I especially remember his good advice when I was unsure about my career. Our friendship grew in the following years, giving me a chance to witness his excellence in many aspects. Fuqing’s insights and contributions in science went far beyond a specific field, and his passion and enthusiasm were always inspiring. I was also impressed by his sincerity and generosity to people, whether to a senior scientist he had known for years or to an undergraduate student he just met. This is one of the reasons he was so loved and well respected.

July 4, you sent an email to us with the information of a job opportunity but saying ‘I can do nothing for you two now’. We felt worried about your health and called you (though you didn’t answer). July 5, I met Rich and asked if he knew your status and got the info of your diagnosis as well as your intention to keep it from students. We cried and kept silent. July 6, I missed your call but received your message ‘please don’t call me’. I thought you were in treatment and didn’t want us to see your weakness. I only sent an email with blessings and planned to visit you after your first stage of treatment. July 7, you sent an email to one of the searching committee of the job to recommend us which we are cc’d. I sent you another email with blessings. July 19, 21:34 mountain time, I got a message from a friend in China. I thought it might just be your illness been known by them finally, but it turned out the worst way I could imagine. A lot of calls came in right after that message. Just couldn’t stop crying. Always think you like another sun, shining on every one you meet and will always be there supporting every one of us. You are always working hard that I can get response almost instantly no matter how late it is. You sleep very little time everyday but keep even more active than us. I feel like you are not away but just fall asleep that Dear Lord wants you to take a break and make up the sleep you lack. I wish someday in the future I could get back to State College and knock on your door, say ‘hey Fuqing, I’m back again!’

In 2007, I received offer letters from both Penn State and Texas A&M. Fuqing was at Texas A&M at the time trying to recruit me. I felt very sorry to Fuqing when I turned down the offer from Texas A&M and chose Penn State. I wrote in my email “I sincerely hope that we would have chance to play soccer together someday.” My wish did come true when Fuqing came to Penn State in 2008.
Fuqing was very energetic and enthusiastic. As busy as he was, he almost never missed one single soccer match which we usually played on weekends. Even if he traveled, he would arrange his flights so he could be on time for our soccer matches. He would send out emails to all the teammates nudging us to play even in the hottest summers and the harshest winters. He was so sharp and fit that he could win all the 50-50 balls and score the most difficult headers. We played soccer together for 8 years in numerous matches before I left State College. Those were the best memories to me.
Fuqing was also my PhD committee member. He guided me into data assimilation work and my dissertation would not be done without his tremendous help. He was always willing to go the extra mile to promote my work, even though I was not a member of his research lab. Whenever he had the chance, he would invite me to present in his workshops, seminars, and conferences. Even after I left State College, he gave me phone calls asking about my family, my work, and giving me advice on my career.
I was so shocked and saddened by his passing. He will always be remembered by me as a mentor, a teammate, a friend, and a role model. May he rest in peace.

I can’t believe this shocking & sad news. Fuqing is such a vivid figure in everyone’s mind. He was a perfect combination of a brilliant genius, serious scientist, and caring soul. He was like a mentor of mine when I started my tenure track at FIU. He was always willing to help and generously sharing his great ideas and insights. My fondest memory of him was his visit at FIU in winter 2011 when I invited him as a speaker of FIU's Distinguished Lecture Series in Hurricane Science. I cherish the memories chatting with him during lunch at FIU Faculty Club and dinner at Miami Tropical Chinese Restaurant. To me he was like some ancient Chinese philosopher with great wisdom. He didn’t talk a lot, but when he spoke, he could always touch the exact point. We worked together as co-conveners of one session in AGU 2012 Fall meeting. Fuqing contributed many wonderful ideas with his great energy. I deeply regret that I wasn’t able to work with him closely in research although he did generously send me his simulation data of the rapid intensification event of Hurricane Dolly (2008). Later he even invited me to apply a cyberscience faculty position at Penn State. Again with my deepest regret I wasn’t able to pursue it due to family reasons, but I highly appreciate his kind encouragement and generous help during my career.
To all of these, I would like to say, thank you Fuqing! You will be greatly missed. May your soul rest in peace! God must be very proud of his creation of such talented people like you. He will definitely cherish the return of your soul to heaven. My condolences to Fuqing’s family.

I nearly became Fuqing's postdoc. When I applied, Fuqing was waiting for one of his NSF proposals' result to come out, so he recommended me to my later postdoc advisor and colleague, Dong Wu, whom I worked with ever since my graduation. At that time, Fuqing just started to switch to data assimilation field, and just 4-5 years later, he has already become the authority of this field. He was so energetic all the time, always replied my email in a few hours, generously wrote a very nice greencard recommendation letter for me, supported me on conference travel to attend the latest gravity wave workshop... I remember when we discussed who should hold the next gravity wave workshop, and he said "I'll provide 120% support to the next one", and that could never happen... I'm so proud of knowing him, and he is the icon of our Chinese American scholars working at NASA Goddard and across the world.
May Fuqing rest in peace, and my care and condolence goes to Fuqing's family. Be strong!

沉痛悼念张福青教授
惊闻美国宾夕法尼亚州立大学教授、华人气象学家的杰出代表、中央气象台的好朋友张福青教授不幸去世，我们深感震惊和悲痛。
10余年来，中央气象台先后有7名预报员受张老师邀请到美国学习深造。在此期间，张老师不遗余力，在专业上给予认真指导，在生活上悉心照顾。这些预报员不仅在科研和业务能力等方面有了大幅度的提升，同时也与张老师结下了深厚友谊。我们为张老师对中央气象台人才培养所做出的突出贡献表示诚挚感谢，为失去这样一位导师和挚友深感悲痛。
张福青教授在大气科学领域成绩卓著，获得无数荣誉。在工作和生活中尽显高尚人格魅力，他治学严谨、思维敏捷、视野开阔、乐观向上、朝气蓬勃、待人真诚，他对学生、朋友、同事和家人有责任、有担当，他是大家心中的楷模和榜样。
当得知张老师突然离世，我们都觉得无比的震惊、悲痛和不舍…大家都无法相信，在一个多月之前还在北京与我们预报员谈笑风生的老师，如今突然离我们而去。我们以后再也没有机会看到他标志性的笑脸、再也没有机会看到他到访中央气象台会商室时与我们预报员热烈讨论的模样……。
张老师的去世不仅是美国气象学界的一大损失，也是中国气象学界的一大损失。

Fuqing's smile and love for life was infectious. I met him for the first time at my first tropical conference in 2012 and I'll always remember how excited he was to get me out to the beach to play volleyball, and that enthusiasm only continued at many more conferences ever since. PS: It's shocking to learn this unbelievable sad news.
Fuqing is a friend of mine. I first met him in a workshop in 2001 (?). After I presented an SREF result about the 25 Jan, 2000
snowstorm in a conference, he grabbed me to his room showing me his then-ongoing predictability research on the
same storm. Apparently, he was very excited about his result. Many years back, I was visiting my family in China.
By accident, he and I were staying in a same hotel in Beijing. We met in the hallway. He was organizing a workshop in that
hotel. Then he grabbed me again to ask me if I can present a talk about ensemble prediction next morning for his workshop because
one of the invited speakers cannot make to the workshop. I was kind of hesitated because I was on vacation and had nothing
with me. But he insisted and convinced me that I had enough time (one night) to make a power point to prepare. So, he gave me
a night of no sleep. Fuqing was always such an energetic and persuasive person!!! I will miss him badly. RIP.

当得知福清离开我们的噩耗，我们难以相信，感到十分震惊，6月4日晚我们还在南大国际会议中心与几位朋友一起相聚，愉快聊天，相互之间开玩笑，非常开心。与福清成为朋友近三十年，一起成长，我们见证了福清成长轨迹，的确很少人能复制他的成长路径。他对科学极端热忱与痴迷，对许多科学问题的认识，独步天下、直达本质，而且可以同时驾驭许多不同方向的问题，其能力在学界也是位居巅峰。福清在工作、生活中充满激情、面带微笑，给予人以无穷的能量。他时时刻刻都在关心他的学生、同事和合作者，给予许多无私的帮助与支持。福清非常关心中国天气学科的发展，亲自组织了夏季学校，来培养年轻一代，积极推动国内高校、科研机构与国外著名高校，成立了国际极端天气联合体，亲自出任联合主席，积极推动中国天气的研究。福清是南京大学一位杰出校友，每次回到母校，其中必谈话题是南大的发展，南大大气科学学院的发展，他给学校、学院发展提供许多实质性的支持和帮助，许多年轻教师、博士生都得到他的许多教诲、培养。天妒英才，福清的离开，是学界的重大损失，南京大学失去了一位杰出的校友，失去了一位我们尊敬的朋友、兄弟和学友。福清一路走好，天堂安息！我们一起为福清夫人、小孩祷告！

Fuqing was a great friend and colleague who will be greatly missed. I never saw him hesitate to take on a challenge or to be willing to help a colleague or student. My fondest memory of working with Fuqing was the two months he and his family spent in Miami in 2008. We accomplished so much in so short a time to get the aircraft Doppler radar data assimilated into the WRF model in real time for the first time. It was also a wonderful visit with his family getting to enjoy Miami living on Key Biscayne, spending time st the Seaquarium and sharing books with Lily who was a voracious reader. I cherish those memories and will greatly miss my great friend Fuqing. My condolences to the family. Rest In Peace my friend.

福青，你走了，一路走好！我不想来送你，你说话不算数。08年到16年，你无数次说过：我们一起做研究，一起带学生，到时一起退休。可现在，你说话不算数，离退休还早着呢。得知你身体不舒服的时候我在国内，想着回到美国第二天就去找你聊聊，可谁想上天如此无情。在你生病期间，一直想给你打电话，但你怕麻烦别人，怕影响别人的工作，坚持不让外人知道。你走了，我还是坚持你的理念，不影响我在国内的工作，就不来送你了，一路走好！
福青，一路走好！我不会来送你。4天过去了，只要稍微安静点，我就不能自已地想到你，想到你就不能控制眼泪。一个大男人，我不想在你面前流泪，也不能在公众面前流泪，更不允许在你的家人面前悲伤。我与你相识于90年代，从2004年开始追随你，不能说朝夕相处，但也一起上班，一起加班，一起出差，两家人一起出游。十几年的时间，除了与父母、兄妹、妻子、子女相处的时间，我们俩应该是相处时间最长的。你走了，我少了个兄长，我控制不住眼泪。
福青，一路走好！希望你到那边后不要再那么累心。在追随你的12年时间里，见到你无数次为了自己的学生、系里的学生、外系的学生、外校的学生、国内的学生解答问题、推荐工作机会付出了巨大的精力。即使是已经毕业了10年的学生，你还是在积极地为他们寻找机会、创造机会。人的精力是有限的，但你总是有无限的精力。
福青，一路走好！希望你到那边后不要再那么劳累，要听听音乐、看看电视剧，适当放松自己。以前跟你说这些的时候，你总是不在意，总是说工作就是你的乐趣。但你太不注意休息了，你从不睡一个整觉。我们俩一起做研究的时候，我经常晚上给你发邮件，你从来没有等到过早晨再给我回复，都是在凌晨3、4点回复我。08-09年为了推动机载雷达资料进业务同化，无数次你陪我工作到凌晨5点，5点之后我可以睡一上午，你确是正常上班。到那边后即使是兴趣所在，也要注意休息。
福青，一路走好！希望你到那边后不要再那么节俭。每次出差，你都要跟我挤一个房间。刚开始我还跟你说咱们又不缺经费，我又打呼噜，你自己睡一个房间吧。你总是说差旅费是有限的，省点就可以多带几个学生出来参加学术会议。在相处的10几年里，无时无刻都是看到你在克俭自己，照顾别人。
福青，一路走好！我不会再叫你老板了，我只叫你福青。以前每次我调侃叫你老板的时候，你总要斥责我：我不是你老板，我们是兄弟、是合作者。是的，你不是我老板，10几年来我们工作一直非常默契，在工作上我们确实是合作者。在工作外，你一直扮演的是长兄。你不只是关心我的工作，从各各方面为我的利益最大化做出努力；你还想尽一切办法帮我夫人解决学习、工作上的难题。第一次准备买房子的时候，你甚至充当了经纪人的角色，找开发商谈合同，找贷款机构办贷款。第二次准备买房子的时候，你动用了一切关系打听房子后面的PSU实验室的试验内容、性质、是否对环境有影响、是否会爆炸等。今年5月4日下午，你还跟我聊了50分钟，聊的都是我的工作、公司情况，没有一句聊你自己。是的，福青，你不是我老板，你是我长兄。
福青，一路走好！我不崇拜你的学术水平，世上天才很多；我不羡慕你朋友满天下，你真诚、你特别愿意为朋友付出。但我特别赞美你对家庭的爱。不管你有多忙，只要在家，你都会主动做家务、抽出时间陪家人、时时刻刻以身作则教育女儿和儿子。你一直把妻子捧在手上，把儿女放在心间上。这么多年来，每一次说起这些我都是五体投地，我一直把你当做丈夫、父亲、儿子中的榜样。我没有你那么忙，但只要稍微忙一点我就会顾不上家庭。

Fuqing was a dear colleague and friend to me and some of my colleagues/students in Sweden. We had such a wonderful time together last year at my university in Sweden, both professionally and privately.

It was a great shock to me when Prof. Bob Houze notified me that Fuqing suddenly passed away during the weekend. I first met Fuqing at the AMS mesoscale conference at Portland, Oregon, in the early 90s when he was still a graduate student at NCSU working on mesoscale gravity waves. Later I met him quite a few times at the summer school on TCs and MCSs at China. I remember that in July 2011, both Prof. Bob Houze and I were invited to attend the Summer School on Severe and Convective Weather at Nanjing University organized by Fuqing and others. In June 2012, I invited Fuqing to visit the National Central University and Central Weather Bureau and to give seminars in Taiwan, and I also gave him and others a personal tour to the National Palace Museum at Taipei. Now we are in the science team of the PRECIP/TAHOPE field project which will collect observation data for MCSs, TCs, and other severe weather phenomena over Taiwan from May to August 2020, and Fuqing played an important role in the early project planning and also on the modeling and data assimilation for this field experiment. His sudden death is a tremendous loss in our field! My deepest condolence to his family, students, colleagues, and friends.

I am fortunate to take his class of meteorology writing last semester. He was passionate and knowledgable in writing meteorology papers, and he was always willing to share the skills with young researchers. I will always remember the days I spent with you during our childhood.
Several decades ago, we spent years together, you and I, brothers, stepped to my home before every weekend began. Time flies, and I would never forget the weekends that you teach me in schoolwork. You are 3 years older than I, you are my elder brother, and you will always be.
I remember, that you and I stood on a boat, that you were seeing through the roaring waves, asking me, “ what if one day we can reserve all the energy of the waves!” You were such a boy, looking forward to devoting yourself to science, and you now are.

I was incredibly shocked and saddened to hear of Fuqing’s passing. His death is an incredible loss to the meteorology community, because of his great scientific accomplishments but also his enthusiasm, kindness, and generosity. I first met Fuqing at a conference when he played poker with a group of us (grad students at the time) late into the night - he was so supportive of and welcoming to the next generation of scientists. He later invited me to visit Penn State, and was the most gracious host, and I was honored when he introduced me at the department colloquium as his friend. As our paths crossed at conferences over the last few years, he always greeted me (and everyone!) with a friendly smile, was excited to hear about my latest work, and offered thoughtful advice - as I’m sure was the experience of many others in their interactions with him. The last time I saw Fuqing was at AGU this past December, when he asked me if I was interested in an idea he had for a new TC field campaign (yes, of course!) I just missed seeing Fuqing when I was visiting Penn State earlier this spring - he was out of town and my trip just missed overlapping with his return. He had been bugging me to come give a seminar for a while, and I now deeply regret pushing it off. Fuqing will truly by missed by anyone who knew him, even a little bit, and he leaves a big gap in the field of meteorology. His death is a loss to many, but especially to his close colleagues, friends, and family - to whom I extend my deepest condolences. I’m so sorry for your loss.

About a month ago, I spoke with you at the backyard of your house. Like many other conversations I have had with you over the years we've been neighbors, this one appeared no difference at all; you gave me advice and smiled all the time. I did not know this would the last time I speak with you.

第一次见到福清教授大概在2006年左右，当时国家973项目在北京组织了一个SummerSchool，福清教授讲解重力波，从浅入深，娓娓道来。从那以后，逐渐了解到福清教授是一个非常杰出、优秀、阳光的大气科学家。他一直是那么阳光灿烂，脸带笑容，从容不迫，给人的感觉就像是一个精力充沛的大学生。

On behalf of my family, I want to express our deepest condolences to the family of Fuqing Zhang. The countless memories that Fuqing has shared with me when we were young college freshmen have and will continue to have a profound impact on my life.
I distinctly recall how Fuqing was doing push-ups while we, a group of 5 friends - Le，Yonghui，Yinghua, myself and Fuqing chatted together on the Nanjing University grounds. The drama play I performed with Fuqing early in college, nicknamed “Tom and Mary” was one that we would never forget, especially for Fuqing, who loved to constantly bring it up during any one of our college reunions.
His dedication to his friends and family guaranteed that every year, around October, birthday wishes would always come from his part to me and Yinghua, without fail. I can’t say that his academic achievements as a distinguished university professor and his ground-breaking research in the field of meteorology came as a surprise to all of us who knew him well, but they gave us an outstanding sense of pride nonetheless. His nomination as an Elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union only strengthened our belief in him and his abilities.
Fuqing was one of the humblest people I would ever meet. When we were chatting, he never touched on his research or his work life, much less the numerous awards he received in that field, preferring to chat about family, friends and all those little things that define us.
Fuqing was also one of the most welcoming fathers and husbands that the class of ’91 would ever know. He welcomed with open arms families of alumni to his home in Pennsylvania, providing opportunities upon opportunities for all of us to gather together as a class. Fuqing was one of the most remarkable people the graduating class of 1991 would ever know, and arguably the most achieved.
Thank you Fuqing for all of that you’ve offered to us and for all that you’ve contributed to advancing the study of meteorology for all of mankind. Thank you, and may you rest in peace, Fuqing.
You will be forever in our hearts. Our thoughts are with your family.

我与张老师不算很熟，我认识您，您不认识我。
第一次近距离接触是在2016年4月波多黎各圣胡安市召开的32届Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology，讨论的却不是学术。我不小心在酒店大堂台阶重重地摔了一跤，膝盖擦伤厉害，有破皮流血。酒店工作人员进行了紧急处理后，建议我去附近诊所继续医治。当时您也在酒店大堂休息，您则建议我还是不要去诊所，说美国诊所看病麻烦，价格贵。虽然有保险，但后面报销程序复杂。建议我到华人便利店，买些药粉，自己处理。
再后来，便是在各种会议中，远远看见您在chair 各sessions，笑容可掬，激情洋溢。知道了您的大名，非常敬佩张老师的才华和成就，很遗憾没有近距离聆听您指导教诲。

7月是一年中阳光最充足的一月。但2019年的7月却是我、福清的家人最为黯淡的一个月。刚刚送走至亲，又惊闻福清老师的噩耗！尤记得6月见到的福清老师还是像小伙子一样精力充沛、激情洋溢；尤记得福清老师和他女儿走在撒满阳光的北京街头的背影，让我艳羡他的事业出色、家庭幸福。

It is still extremely hard for me to comprehend and accept the fact that my advisor, Fuqing, has already left us. This is an enormous loss to his families, to his students (including myself), to his colleagues, and to our scientific community. He was still very young and gone too soon. During my PhD study at Penn State, I had a lot of difficulties in my research. However, Fuqing was always very patient with me. He was always there for me when I had any problem with work, even though he had many many projects going on at the same time. Furthermore, he was always more excited than myself whenever I had any kind of progress, and it made me feel happy to see that he was happy about my achievement. It is clear to me that the success of my PhD dissertation won’t be possible without the help of my advisor, Fuqing. I know that I am very lucky to realize many of my dreams at Penn State because of him.
Many things about Fuqing motivated me when I worked with him in the past, and they will continue to motivate me in the future. The last time I met Fuqing was at a conference in Beijing between late May and early June. Just like those old days at Penn State, Fuqing had many many many great ideas about my work and my career, and I benefited greatly from him and his vision. It was always a joy for me to talk about science, career, and sports with Fuqing.
Fuqing, I really wish that I could talk with you again. I still need to learn many things from you, and I am very proud to be your student. I will always remember your passion, your enthusiasm, and your smile. Your legacy will live on forever, and you will always live in my heart.

I did not know Fuqing well, but I met him at an AMS meeting in 2011-12 timeframe and he struck me as one of the kindest people I'd ever met in this field. We were discussing something related to small scale structures in storms, and he listened, was patient, and gently prodding. He is the type of person that stays with you after only one interaction, and I am seeing the outpouring among meteorological professionals and offer my sincere condolences to all of you who knew him well.
