Ed was a role model, a wonderful mentor, and a caring colleague. I recall an occasion when he stopped by my office on a Friday afternoon and I was finishing up an informal meeting with a few students. He greeted each of my students by their first name because it turns out that these students took his class during their freshmen year. The students present were overwhelmed that a professor would remember their names and after so many years.
I'm blessed to have the chance to have had many coffees with Ed all these years. Our last coffee together was in May. We spent two afternoons in State College catching up. He was particularly proud of Enrico's essay: "How Computer Games Changed My Life".
Rest In Peace Ed. Thank you for being a wonderful friend and always so generous with your time. My condolences to Ruilin and Enrico.

Dear Rulin and Enrico,
We are very sorry to hear that Ed has passed away. As a graduate student at CMU, Ed was an alumnus of mythic proportions. His achievements were an example to all of us about the potential upside opportunities of pursing a PhD in economics. While I was working on my phd Ed took up an appointment at the University of Pittsburgh and I had opportunities to take his classes and to interact with him informally over a wide range of other topics ranging from music to philosophy to bicycling.
Our friendship was renewed in Minneapolis where we were colleagues at the Minneapolis Fed. Hiromi and I are still grateful for the meal and company that Ruilin and Ed provided to us right after our son Sam was born.
It was a great privilege to have the opportunity to interact over the years with a brilliant mind and at the same time such a straight unassuming individual.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
