Larry bailed me out of a jam when my truck broke down on a research trip near Karthaus. He had just finished floating the Susquehanna River with a friend and loaned me his truck to get back to University Park. He rode back to the university in his friend's vehicle and picked up his truck in the parking lot where I left it. I was very thankful for the help and have not forgotten his selfless act of kindness. Bill Sharpe

We offer our sincere condolences to the Kuhns' family. We have been coming to the farm from Maryland since 2004. In 2017, we forgot that the farm was closed on Monday. We called the house and Larry, met us and let us pick out a tree. He was a such a kind man. We will never forget him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My sympathy goes out to the Kuhns Family. Larry and I joined the PSU faculty the same year. Larry was a dedicated teacher, and the students liked and respected Larry. He was an excellent extension educator and all the nurserymen and Christmas tree growers appreciated the outstanding service and advice that he gave them. Larry was also an excellent colleague because he would provide help to anyone whenever he could. Larry’s contribution to the Department and the horticultural industry will long be remembered.
Blessings,
Jay Holcomb

Larry was a dear friend whom I shall never forget. I love all-rounders, and Larry Kuhns was an all-rounder - work hard, study hard and play hard. Larry was a family man who loved and cared for his family.. He loved the game of rugby, and I thoroughly enjoyed our time together as Penn State ruggers in the late 1960s. As an all-rounder, Larry was always "full of life", with an emphasis on always - as we all witnessed and enjoyed at the Golden Oldies rugby tournament in Dublin, Ireland. Thank you for that Larry. And then there was Larry Kuhns the Penn State professor, the tree grower, and the lover of rugby with his unending involvement with Penn State and State College rugby.
Above all....., yes, above all of the above, I shall always remember Larry Kuhns as a dear friend whose feelings of friendship toward Anjoe and me were deeply sincere. It is going to be impossible for me to forget my dear friend Larry Kuhns. May he now be where I know he wanted to be at his passing from this dear earth of ours.
Marianne, Joel, Emily, Catherine and Geoffrey, my deepest and sincerest feelings of sympathy to all of you. God bless you.

Larry was a true inspiration to me and many other fellow Christmas tree growers. The knowledge he passed on regarding weed control helped so many members of the Pennsylvania Christmas Tree Growers Association. His presentations at the PCTGA meetings were always well attended because of the information (and humor) he provided. His presence will be missed by more people than you know.

My deepest condolences to the Kuhns family. I will never forget Larry traveling to Colorado Springs with the PSU women’s and men’s rugby teams, traveling to his tree farm, making off-color jokes as often as possible, and just always being kind and joyful. He also proctored an exam for me for an extension course I took one summer! Larry, you will be missed and remembered fondly. With sincere peace and love to your family and Larry’s memory, Melina Kuchinov PSUWRFC ‘98

I worked with Larry and Bob Wingard (back in 1980) in cooperative extension doing research on deer damage to agriculture. Larry taught me that one could work hard to get the task done and have lots of fun while accomplishing it. I remember one time when we came home, after a day in the field, with free Christmas trees from Indiana County! He was a genuine individual and I will not forget him. I want to extend my sympathy to Larry's entire family.

I knew this day was coming. In fact, just the other day I thought of Larry and wondered how he was getting along. But the news of his passing still hits hard. I mean, how could a guy like Dr. Kuhns succumb to anything? His personage was larger than life, and the impact he had on all of his former students and on the green industry that he loved was even larger. Larry was my co-major professor during my M.S. degree program at Penn State and he taught me countless life and academic lessons. Because of Larry I now know how to prune Christmas trees, fend off bloodthirsty black flies, and set up a completely randomized block design for any herbicide study you can imagine. He taught me about being an Extension professional, helping others, and having fun while working your tail off. During our last telephone conversation I tried to thank him for all that he'd done for me, but the words caught in my throat and before I lost my composure (you sure as heck don't cry in front of Larry) I decided to change the subject. Bad decision on my part. So Larry, if you're reading this, please know that you made a huge difference in my life. And your memory will always make me smile. And yes, I now fully regret that vote I cast for Walter Mondale in 1984. You were right, again.

Larry stood out among his peers to the industry. I believe it would be safe to say he was unconventional in his approach, but he rallied the attention of the Christmas tree and landscape industries that he so loved, trained, and supported over many years of his career. Larry knew how to get a hospitality room at the nursery conference humming, engaging all who would attend. Larry was not bashful to share his opinion on a matter because he cared to stimulate thoughtful consideration to help a business/individual be successful. I have worked with quite a few of the landscape contracting students that Larry had taught where he left a lasting impression. While I was not one of his students, I was one of the businesses that benefited by knowing Larry Kuhns. May you rest in peace while we find some joy in the memories you have created with us.

Our deepest sympathies to the whole Kuhns family. We knew Larry since he was a little boy and watched him mature into an outstanding man. Larry accomplished so many things in his life and impacted the world with his many contributions to the causes of conservation. What we didn't know was his love of rugby, just like our son Nick. May he rest in peace after his long battle.
With love, Cathy & Nick Kavounas

I remember sitting in his office and looking at his photos on the wall. The one that caught my eye was him receiving an award while dressed in uniform. It was obvious it was something he was very proud of. Never asked, but it explained to me his tough and rough exterior, but warm at heart on the inside. I remember giving him a giant bear hug from behind in the hallway and lifting him up just to see if I could shake it out. I appreciated his candor as a student and later as a colleague. I would visit him at his farm and he would tell me of the perfect soil and climate conditions for growing Frazier Firs. I hope heaven is filled with perfect Frazier Firs as far as your eyes can see, Larry. RIP, my friend. - Tom Clark and Family.
