Dr. Hillson was one of the two finest men I have had the honor to know and study under. He guided my MS degree which he told me was good enough for a PhD but that I should go elsewhere for that. I did go to University do Wisconsin and achieved that degree. Dr. Hillson was absolutely right and I will be forever grateful. One incident stands out in my memory. My son was a few years old and Dr.Hillson had him standing on the bench in one of the labs. He started asking my son what would happen as he moved various parts from the back to the front of the plane. My son, also named Jim, caught on right away and after Dr. Hillson moved enough parts, my son said “ you just turned the plane around”. He was impressed. We will miss visiting you, may you now rest in eternal peace.

Thanks to Uncle Jim, I will never misspell "encyclopedia", will always mispronounce "vocabulary", and will always find joy in silly jokes. I did not get his green thumb, but will always find beauty in nature and think of him when I see an orchid...or even seaweed. Every unique bottle I find is for you, Uncle Jim! You were a grandfather when I was left with that void, and I will always be grateful. Love you and miss you!

I believe there may be a handful of people in everyone's lives who have such an influence, the life they affect would not have been the same without them. Jim Hillson is one of those people for me. Knowing the interest he had in science and nature, I'm sure the fact that he inspired a similar interest in me was not unintentional. But I am wholly grateful for, and frequently speak of, the time I and my family were able to spend on nature walks in the Pennsylvania mountains, exploring and discovering -even the misadventure leading to a few hours 'lost' on the trail- and I have pursued an interest and a career in that sort of knowledge and discovery because of him.
Jim Hillson was the best sort of teacher that only the luckiest people might have known once and briefly in school. But, I am aware that I had an even more rare experience. To me he was Uncle Jim and I got a lifetime of lessons and love that will never be forgotten from him.

My Uncle Jimmy was someone I looked up to and enjoyed being with. We once shared a beer together and talked about deep personal things. It was a surreal and special moment shared with him. Thank you Uncle Jim for providing some stability in my life. I will miss you.

Uncle Jim was the best. From a young age, I remember him helping my brothers and I look for crayfish in the Huron river near Grandma Hillson's house. He also liked to fool us when we were young by pretending to eat lightning bugs. We thought he really did! Uncle Jim loved to point out the many hidden treasures of nature in the mountains near his home in State College.He took delight in many things and could always make people laugh. I will remember him and miss him always.
