Sincere condolences to the Pavlechko family. My knowledge of Ron began when I was a 19 year old student at Penn State. I was thrilled to be a pledge at Sigma Pi Fraternity and little did I know about hazing. I remember talking to Ron (and Gary Hull who was our other football player at the house). Ron treated me with such kindness and never belittled any of our pledge class and advised us how to react to any hazing. Sadly, he moved out the following year and I never saw him again. But, I never forgot his kind, mature and gentle demeanor. One never knows what impact they have on others at any point in time. Requiascam in pace, Ron.

Sending warm hugs to Mr. Pavlechko's family, he was proud of each one of you! I enjoyed our conversations learning about his family and remember how radiant he would become talking about his grandchildren. We laughed and smiled, and sometimes he would bring tears to my eyes. Please know that he loved each one of you dearly and was proud of you all.
The love he had for his wife was very endearing. He put his worries for her way above the concerns we had for his own health, and several times I had to "put my foot down" and make him care for himself first. (Although I doubt he listened ;) )
I pray that you all continue to live life to the fullest and that you are blessed with wonderful memories.
Sincerely,
"Mr. Pavlechko's favorite Nurse", Heather

To the Pavlechko Family: I would never have developed into the player I became, nor would I have been as good a person if it were not for Coach Pav. At practice he always stressed technique-be sharp, crisp, precise. I needed that as I loved football and had good instincts, but was not that disciplined and had a bit of a chip on my shoulder in 10th grade. Plus, I needed every advantage as would I ever have superior size, speed or athleticism. Coach always used respectful language, and would go out of his way to point out achievements. I remember Tom Spell and I going to the Booster meetings and he would be showing the game film, and would constantly be pointing out what people did right and would go out of his way to point out achievements of the lesser known/lesser playing time players. Coach stressed representing yourself, your family and your school and would always remind us after our games to “not do anything foolish” and “take care of our bodies”. He was always gracious, forever I will remember after we beat Williamsport to complete our undefeated senior season I went and thanked him for all he had taught me and he said “No Kurt, thank you” and when on to thank me for all my effort in developing myself over the past 3 years, and said he would always remember the image of me dragging down Bragg (Williamsport’s highly touted running back) for a loss.
Upon graduating I first went to Bloomsburg, but left there as I had become spoiled with how well-run State High practices were, and was so used to a constant emphasis on good technique by Coach. I walked on a Penn State and wound up hustling my way onto special teams as a freshman, and started at outside linebacker as a senior-not because of size, speed or athleticism but rather hard work and great technique (which I owe to Coach Pav).
Coach taught me just as much about being a good person. I remember years later I was in town as a classmate of mine Kevin Engle passed away prematurely. Kevin was not much of a football player, but a really good person. At the service I remember looking around and being surprised to not see any other classmates, but of course I did see Coach Pav. I was away from State College for 25 years after graduating from PSU, but upon returning almost 5 years ago I was fortunate to run into Coach on occasion. We would frequently bump into each other at Weis as we both liked to shop, and would compare healthy foods in each other’s carts. I told him I was coaching youth league, and like he did I would stress fundamentals and proper conduct. Every time he would ask me about myself and my family, and I remember him asking about my wife’s clothing store-something I had told him about years earlier. He sincerely took interest in people, always wanted to know how you and your family were doing, and he truly listened and remembered. I am not sure if I will succeed, but I will spend the rest of my life striving to be like that. I thank Coach Pav for all that he has done for me, Kurt Bernier, #55, ’82.

Mrs. Pav, Timmy, and Ace - so sorry for your loss. He was a great husband, father, coach, and mentor. I remember waaaay back in the day Mr. Pav laughing at Tim and I playing one-on-one football in your yard. All 40 lbs of me jumping on Tiimmy's back and trying to bring him down (with limited success I might add). He will be greatly missed.

Dear Barb and Family,
I am writing on behalf of my mother, Bea Smith. We received the sad news of Ron's passing from our
daughter-in-law in PA. Mom wanted to thank you again for being such great next door neighbors and wonderful friends. Your entire family will always hold a special place in our hearts. We used to come up and visit when my girls, Kasey and Aimee were much younger (they are now 31 and 26!) and always enjoyed seeing ya'll and the BIG white dogs. Again we are so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Sympathy and love from Georgia,

It was my pleasure to work with Pav who was not only a fantastic administrator but more importantly, a kind, caring man. He was always one of my favorites and I was honored that he considered me a friend.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ron is someone who who impacted the lives of so many people - - especially his family, the numerous students and student-athletes that he coached and served throughout his career, and those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a charismatic, caring and motivational man and I personally want you to know how honored and thankful I am for having had him as coach and mentor at a very impressionable time in my development. His influence on me was a gift that I will cherish and continue to draw upon on throughout my life. So sorry to hear this sad news. I was in the 1967 recruiting class with Ron, also as an offensive lineman. As John Madden has pointed out, offensive linemen are usually smart and—take this for what it’s worth—“nice guys.” A mean streak can be a benefit for defensive linemen, but offensive linemen need to be tough, team-oriented players who can deliver a blow at the point of attack every time. That was Ron, for sure. I admired the way he conducted himself on and off the field and was proud to count him as a friend.
As someone who played football from fourth grade through college and then graduated from the College of Liberal Arts with a degree in English, I have seen football coaches, athletic directors, and English teachers—as the saying goes—up close and personal. So it gives me great pleasure to see that the players, coaches, and students who encountered Ron in these various aspects of his career realize just what a gift that was. A true gentleman through and through.

Aaron, Leslie and Nick - we are so sorry to learn about the loss of your father/grandfather. Although we did not know him, after reading all of the many heartfelt comments that have been written about him, we surely wish that we did. The comments provide such an outpouring of compliments and gratitude to a man who clearly was known, admired and respected by so many. The words that others have written about him paint a lasting portrait of a beautiful person. May you find comfort now, knowing that so many people equated the name "Pav" with such a quality, caring and giving gentleman.

It was such an honor to do the play by play for Little Lion Football while coach Pav was the man in charge. He had such a calm yet intense demeanor. While winning was certainly the goal, molding men was always the priority. I had so much to learn at that juncture and Pav was a great a teacher. Those were amazing times in my life and that’s because of the great people like Coach Pav that you meet along the way. Mary and I would like to add our condolences to Barb, Tim, Aaron and the entire Pavlechko family. It was truly an honor to work for Ron during my tenure as head football coach at State High. He was the type of athletic director that believed in giving his coaches the tools to succeed...then sat back and watched...and gently smiled in the background. He never sought the limelight, but was responsible for the strength of the entire State High athletic program that remains the envy of the entire state of Pennsylvania. I never felt that I was working for him, because he had the ability to make me feel that we were working together to develop the football program. Thanks Ron for the lessons you shared, and making me a better coach, and person.

Mrs. Pav, Tim, Aaron and family, please know my thoughts and prayers are with you always. I pray that you find comfort in reflecting on the warm moments and funny times experienced with Coach Pav over his lifetime. While his time with us was short, his impact on all who were blessed to know him was immense. His was a life well lived! No words can aptly express how heartbroken I am over the passing of one of the most inspirational human beings I have ever had the privilege of knowing and calling my dear friend. Coach Pav was a father to me at a time in my life when I needed guidance, support, and discipline. Thank you for sharing him with me. He taught me so much about life and about the importance of paying attention to the "little things" and always striving to do the right thing no matter the circumstance. He helped me believe in myself when I was in doubt. He helped me understand the importance of forgiving myself when things did not go as planned. Everytime I was around Coach Pav I was always struck by his genuineness, kindness, and compassion for me and others. He had such a positive, engaging spirit which made you feel comforted when in his presence. Throughout my adult life he was always there to support me for life's biggest moments, including the untimely passing of my dear mother. He was the first person I called. I will never forget how he comforted me through such a difficult period. I will also never forget our last conversation just a few days before he ascended into heaven. As we both knew his time was near, I had the chance to let him know how much I loved and appreciated him, and how much of an inspiration he has been and will always be to me. He expressed the same. We agreed that we would see each other again. And we will. Rest easy Coach Pav. See you next season.
