I just happened on Lynn’s obituary. He was responsible for “opening the door” for me to landscape architecture Anna’s he allowed me, a Regional planning student. To take his Jr. Level design studio in spite of not having any of the prerequisites. IMy husband and I also loved house sitting for him when he was out of town while we were graduate students at Penn State in the early 80s. He was a great teacher.

I first knew Lynn when I was staff on the Hill and he was a Fellow. We worked in a small subcommittee office on a wide array of environmental and preservation issues, he a retired LA and me, an architect with a newly minted environmental masters degree . We had a lot in common. We became fast friends and in the ensuing years he cajoled me into taking his place and lecturing at a conference in Lisbon (which I had no business doing), presenting at a student ASLA conference in Arkansas as well as guest lecturing on occasion. My daughter and I spent a few glorious weekends at his farm in PA. All through the years he stayed in touch and stayed a friend. He certainly left a legacy in the students he taught and the landscapes he sculpted. He taught me a lot. He always had a good story. He was one of a kind.

Lynn had a tremendous impact on me as a Landscape Architecture student at Penn State and was instrumental in helping to channel my passion for design into pursuing Architecture as well. I can honestly say that the success I have experienced and the inspiration I have shared with others in terms of unifying the design disciplines can be traced back to conversations I had with Lynn. I will always have fond memories of him and know that his legacy is carried on through the spirits of those fortunate enough to have known him.

Lynn taught our landscape architecture history and theory class at University of Texas when I started in 2004. I was struggling in studio to figuring out the “why” to my design decisions and Lynn’s always entertaining and thorough anchoring of history (much of it experienced first hand) provided a guiding light. He was such a great teacher and excited to pass along knowledge to whomever would listen. We became close, and on Fridays we would often grab a drink after class. It was always amazing to me, but never shocking, that every time we went to a different destination for libation, he somehow knew everyone on the way. He was always kind to me and pushed me to accomplish more. Even though we had a number of years between us, he felt like a best friend. I am sorry for your loss, and happy that I got to know such a warm individual. Lynn made this world a much more interesting place.

Dear Derek and Brad,
When we moved to Sinking Creek Road in 1983, your family (down the hill) was the closest of our "few" neighbors. Lots more people now!
Lynn was a gentleman and a great neighbor. One memory was a time when Chris and Seth were out riding their bikes. Lynn noticed that Seth was wearing a bike helmet but that his mother was not. He, politely, suggested that "mom" also needed to wear one. She has ever since!
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to you and to Lynn's family.
Sincerely,
Bill and Chris Palmer

Lynn and I shared our worlds of Farmland Preservation here in Centre County. We served together on the Centre County Farmland Preservation Board and I was honored to share the co-founding space for the Farmland Trust with Lynn. We spent many thoughtful hours shaping the Centre County farmland preservation efforts and his impact with that effort will be felt long into the future of farming in Centre County. Thank you to Lynn's family for allowing us to share Lynn's passions, wisdom and intellect as he walked through our Centre County space in his life's journey.

Lynn was the first person I met when I came to State College - a group of us went out dancing at a hotel and he was flamboyant in his red coat. He was very proud of his West Virginia roots and a great countryman. He knew how to cane chairs and smoke ham and stuff sausages: something interesting was always happening at his lovely property near Centre Hall:,, and his obituary shows what a lively, action-packed life he led. I'm happy to have known him!
