It seems fitting that Jim’s last ride was in the type of vehicle he loved (Cadillac), heading for a destination he spoke of often (south of the Mason-Dixon Line), wrapped in the flag that meant so much to him. RIP my friend. I have many memories from the past 20 years when, back in 2000 he so graciously decided that an old guy like me was worthy of his wonderful daughter, a true jewel in his life. Just a few months ago we sat in his room watching one of the old screwball comedies he was so fond of viewing, sipping a scotch (Chivas Regal, his favorite, of course) and just enjoying a quiet couple of hours; that memory is one I will treasure for a long, long time. Whenever I was with Jim I found myself slowing down, being more at peace with the world than was usually the case, and not worrying about what needed to be done or what else I could be doing. He embodied patience, humility, kindness, and love. He will be missed but fortunately, he left many gifts for all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.
I found these photos in an old family album. Picture 1: The first is our father, James King Gray with little baby Jimmy sitting on his lap (~1935). Look at how healthy he is after his surgery. (See story below written by Sarah Tateosian). Picture 2: Jimmy and little sister Sarah (~1943). Picture 3: This is a typical family portrait (~1944). From the left is James King Gray, Jr., our mother, Delane Rodgers Gray, with Sarah Watkins Gray Tateosian on her lap, Nancy Ann Gray Waller with the braids, and our father, James King Gray, Sr.
Dear Dad - You taught me patience, humility, faith and humor. I have more than enough love from you to last the rest of my life. Thanks for the memories!
