I had been thinking of my dear friend, Michael from my short time at Penn State 1977-1978. Sadly, I came across this obituary. We sang together and I think he played the harmonica. Amazing Grace was a favorite. I also think we saw John Lee Hooker which began my love of blues. Micheal talked about his interest in expressing himself & the universe completely without use of color. Or in effect, the contrast between void & all color.
I am glad to know he touched so many other lives, as I have always felt a better person for having known him. My condolences to all who mourn.
Sincerely, Susan Hankin-Birke

Dear Diane, Dave & John,
Your Brother was a Man of Brilliant Layered Colors & He was the Brightest Light! He was not only my Teacher but my Mentor & had strong influences on my future thru Art & Drama! His skill in drama was knowing how to find "The Good in Each Person" & directing them to pay it forward. The Lord took him to rest too Soon but relieved him of his pain & sorrow! Michael had a very Rare talent & his Bright Light still shines thru his own artwork he left behind! And his Love still remains in my Beating Heart!
Memory Eternal Michael.
Sincerely, Dana Bungo-Whitcomb.

Mike Solan, you will be missed. For years you were my Art/Advanced Art teacher. Never short on sarcasm I got you, even when you were tough or having a bad day. Beneath that exterior was a wonderful man who cared for his students very much. As FB friends many years later it was nice to reconnect and talk as adults. Rest In Peace my friend and mentor. Wanda

My condolences to Michael's family. It was my pleasure getting to know Michael. Reading about him I see that there was so much I didn't know. The last time I saw him, there were 3 of us visiting him. We laughed for several hours. I had not heard him laugh that way before. He had a great sense of humor and those are the memories I will very fondly remember. My life has been blessed by knowing Michael. Just wish it would've been longer. Micki Hartranft

I was a student of Mr. Solan's years ago (Class of '86) and I have great memories of our play in 1986 of I Remember Mama. I played Uncle Kris a very old Swedish grandfather. Mike challenged me because I was a 17 year old kid trying to portray an elderly man with a Swedish accent. It's a memory I'll never forget. Just the other evening on Turner Classic Movies I Remember Mama was playing and it took me back to 1986 and the hard work and dedication by just not the student actors but by Mr Solan. He took great pride in bringing the arts to the Moshannon Valley because there really wasn't much to offer. I appreciate now the commitment and time that he contributed to our little production of I Remember Mama.

Oh Ed, I just love your post. Michael shared with me about your role. He spoke so proudly of you and your effort in that performance. We laughed at how challenging that was for a 17 year old.
Thank you so much for trying out and performing in one of Michael's plays. He worked so hard on all of the plays. He truly loved working with the students. He was so proud of all of your efforts.
thanks so much,
Diane Ebken

Michael was a wonderful uncle to our son Zach Kelly and grandson Ezra Kelly and we counted him as a treasured member of our family. He adored and doted on his nieces Allie and Sarah and we always looked forward to sharing family holidays and celebrations with him and his beloved sister, brother in law, and brother, Diane and Bill Ebken and Uncle Dave. He bravely suffered some medical challenges in these last years, yet always showed gratitude and counted himself fortunate to have such a wonderful family. We can't imagine a family gathering without him but we pray he is at peace from all his pain and suffering and in the arms of his mother and father. Bless his soul.

Thank you Nancy for your beautiful post. Michael never let a day go by where he did not ask about Allie, Zach and Ezzie. He loved them so.
You shared so many of our special celebratory occasions with our family and Michael, I know you understand how important he was to all of us and how greatly he will be missed.

I had Mr. Solan as an art teacher in high school, and he motivated and challenged me to become the best artist I could, in his strict but sincere way. Even reaching out to him years later after I become an art teacher, he always gave good advice. I will greatly miss him and hope to see him again in heaven one day. Thoughts and prayers to all those missing him.

Mike was our cousin., His mom and my husbands father were brother and sister. He was one of the most dedicated teachers Moshannon Valley ever had..........he always had a smile on his face. He is to remembered for the wall painting in the auditorium at school. He wasn't just a teacher, he was a master of the Arts. God bless you Mike, we Love you CuZ.

Michael was an extremely gifted man. He amazed me with how multi talented he was...he had a beautiful singing voice and he could dance, play harmonica, build his own home, paint. Yet, he was so humble about it all. To say he was an interesting man is an understatement. We had quirky things we would talk and laugh about, and once he had me singing a Willie Nelson song, and made me practice some stanzas until I got them exactly right. He was such a devoted son, brother and uncle and friend.
