John and I finished 12 years of public school together in Susquehanna, usually in the same classroom, and started at Penn State on the same day. He was smart, industrious, talented at basketball, and guilty of a mischievous sense of humor. After he learned from a co-worker that I had fallen off the roof here in Chapel Hill and had broken my foot in 2006, he phoned to cheer me up (I think) and asked if I was auditioning for Clark Griswold’s part in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. At the time, it was one of the few laughs I had. Bless John and his family.

We were so very sad to hear of John's passing. He was our most respected and trusted veterinarian from the late 70's until his retirement. He was incredibly good with terrified cats...so gentle and kind. One of the very best! We are thinking of his wife and family at this sad time...so sorry for your loss.

Dear Thomas family,
John was our vet from 1976 when we moved to State College and got our first dog. Through five dogs and two cats, he was warm, understanding and caring to them and to us. His gentle manner and sense of humor were always treasured, especially when a pet had to be put down at an old age. We have missed him since his "retirement"; other Mt. Nittany vets are very nice, but there can be no one who'll truly replace him. I am crying as I type this and my wife did when I read the lovely obit that appeared in the CDT today. Thank you for sharing that with the rest of the world. Our most sincere condolences to you at your loss

TO FAMILY MEMBERS AND BELOVED PETS OF JOHN'S THAT WILL MISS HIS PRESENCE AND LOVE. OUR LOSS IS HEAVENS GAIN AND I AM SURE HE HAD A GREAT GREETING ON RAINBOW BRIDGE BY ALL THE PETS HE HAS HELPED OVER ALL THE YEARS OF HIS DEVOTION TO BEING A KIND,GENTLE AND CARING VET. I FIRST MET JOHN WHEN I HAD TO PUT MY FIRST DOG TO SLEEP AND HE WAS WORKING WITH DR. YINGLING . HIS KINDNESS WAS SO HELPFUL AT THAT TIME AS I WAS YOUNG AND NEVER EXPERIENCED LOSS BY BEING THE ONE TO END A LIFE . THEN I GOT A HORSE AND HE WAS MY VET THAT GOT US BOTH THRU MANY TRIALS AND HIS UNDEVOTED LOVE FOR ANIMALS WAS A GOD SEND TO US BOTH. I WAS SO SAD WHEN HE STOPPED TREATING LARGE ANIMALS AND I HAD TO FIND ANOTHER VET FOR SMOKY AND NONE EVER FILLED JOHN'S SHOES OR HAD MY TRUST AS HE HAD. HE TREATED MANY OF MY DOGS OVER THE YEARS AND EACH ONE BROUGHT JOY AND HEARTACHE WHEN I HAD TO PUT THEM TO SLEEP BUT JOHN HELPED MAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER WITH HIS GENTLENESS AND LOVE FOR THEM. I KNOW THEY WERE ON THAT BRIDGE AND HE IS THE SWEETEST VET HEAVEN COULD EVER HAVE NOW. THEY ARE ALL KEEPING HIM BUSY AND ENJOYING HIS ENERGY AND KINDNESS UP THERE. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE ON A MOTORCYCLE RIDE ONE NIGHT IN SCOTIA AND A RED FOX RAN OUT AND WE COULD NOT MISS HIM AND HE WAS UNCONSCIOUS. I WRAPPED HIM IN MY JACKET AND PUT HIM ON MY LAP AND WE RODE TO DR. THOMAS'S HOUSE AT ABOUT 9:00 AT NIGHT AND I RANG HIS DOORBELL AND HE ANSWERED THE DOOR. HE WAS NOT AT ALL UPSET THAT I BOTHERED HIM AT HOME AND LATE AT NIGHT. INSTEAD HE INVITED US IN AND PUT THE UNCONSCIOUS FOX ON THE FLOOR IN THE HALLWAY AND EXAMINED HIM. HE FOUND NOTHING BROKEN AND FELT HE WOULD BE OK, I BROUGHT HIM HOME AND PUT HIM IN AN EMPTY RABBIT HUT MY KIDS HAD OUTSIDE. THE NEXT MORNING ABOUT 6 AM I LOOKED OUT MY WINDOW AND HE WAS IN THERE WALKING AROUND. I WENT OUT, OPENED THE DOOR AND HE RAN OUT AND INTO THE WOODS. THANK YOU DR. THOMAS FOR HELPING US SAVE THAT FOX, HE IS UP THERE ON RAINBOW BRIDGE TOO I'M SURE. THAT WAS LONG AGO AND I NEVER GOT A BILL FOR HIS SERVICE THAT NIGHT BUT OUR GRATITUDE AND THANKS FOR ALL HE HAS DONE FOR US AND OUR PRECIOUS ANIMALS, PETS AND WILDLIFE, OVER THE YEARS HAS NO PRICE TAG. LOVE AND KINDNESS ARE ACTION WORDS AND HE WAS FULL OF IT. ALL MY SYMPATHY GOES TO ALL OF HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND ALL THE ANIMALS THAT HE HAS TOUCHED OVER SO MANY YEARS. GOD BLESS,

Dear Miriam, Debbie, Jeff, Jonathon, Jack and Josh,
So sorry for your loss - it's hard to believe.
But, what I can say is he lived life fully and enjoyed his friends, family and Work more than most! He had a very "full" life, one to be admired and respected by many. He was fun, positive and so kind to all animals. My memory besides in High School with Debbie and seeing Dr. Thomas, who always insisted I called him, "Dad" when I visited.
A more recent memory would be when we visited him and Miriam with our children and dog, Goldie - she ran all off the property and he thought she was a really great dog. He also was the one I spoke to before we bought her 15 years ago, to ask him about the Goldendoodle which I never heard of at the time. He thought the Golden Retriever made a great family dog but of course was partial to the Standard Poodle - his thought was the mixed breed may be healthier and should be a good dog. So we proceeded with purchase of Goldie and we still have her today, 15 years later - he was right! She has been a good dog and healthy. He even recently helped me with the guidance of my Mom's new puppy. He's always there if you need him and so kind always.
I will miss his "chain letters" via email.
RIP
Love and prayers to you all!

Miriam, Jeff, Debbie, Jonathan, Jack and Josh,
You’ve been on my mind constantly this week. This man was a guiding force in my life for the past 25 years. I could never tell him that, because it would go straight to his head and he’d use it against me :-) But, I know he knew it. He loved all aspects of his life, and his family for sure. I’m thankful for the many years of memories of his wit, charm, impishness, skill, and, for sure, his kindness and generosity.
Sending love to you all,
Lee

I met Dr. Thomas in the early 1980's when I was a college student and thinking of becoming a veterinarian, I went to Mt. Nittany to get some small animal vet experience. Later, after I became a veterinarian, he was a great colleague and he and his staff took wonderful care of my dogs and cats. I remember his humor, care, intelligence, and carriage - so tall and impressive! His character was not only defined by what he did, but also by the wonderful veterinary hospital he maintained. My condolences to Miriam, his family, and all his friends who loved him so dearly. Nancy Diehl
