I was at PennState as a graduate student from 1998 to 2002 and Bob was such a shining light in what was a very difficult time for me! He told me not to giggle while teaching but I'm still a giggler and I know he understood that was who I was. He was so supportive and made every learning opportunity fun and engaging. I will truly miss him!

I was an undergraduate at Penn State in the late 80s and early 90s, and I was one of many participants in the summer research program that Bob organized. It was a great experience, and as part of that I came to see how good of a teacher and mentor Bob was. For the next 15 years, I would come back to visit folks I knew at PSU every year or two, and I always enjoyed the chats that I had with Bob. Unfortunately I found it harder to keep in touch once I had my own family, but I still kept him in mind. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing, and I would just like to add my voice to those emphasizing how highly missed he will be.

Dr Stern was my advisor from 1977-80 at Penn State. He was kind, brilliant and understanding. He provided excellent advice and helped me decide on pursuing a PhD in Psychology or medicine. I was fortunate to be involved in EGG research and he guided me how to conduct and publish biofeedback research studies. He was the epitome of a great professor and human being.

From the moment we landed in State College in 1979, even before then, when we were on a rather rushed house buying trip, Bob and Wilma treated us like family.
They helped in so many ways to make us feel welcome, inviting Hillary to their home, and us to dinners and parties to meet friends and faculty. I have never felt such an embrace of belonging as this.
Thank you, Bob, for your generosity of spirit, guidance, and loving heart. Mine is full of sadness and sorrow.

I first met Bob at a fitness facility where I was working, He and his wife Wilma were clients there and I had the privilege of training Wilma for quite a few years! Bob would come in to workout as well and I was typically behind the front desk when he would arrive for his sessions. He would walk in with a great big smile on his face and say, "Hello Robynne" and my response was always, "Hi Bob!" and we would continue with a little conversation. He was a person who always warmed my heart, full of happiness, positivity and down to the innermost part of his core, completely genuine. As Bob's vision started to fade, his hearing became incredibly impeccable. It didn't stop him from working out and he got really good at recognizing my voice amongst a sea of other trainers and people.... I'd say, "Hi Bob!" in my big, booming voice and he would respond with that great big smile and say, "That's Robynne! Hello Robynne!".
As Bob's Parkinson's and sight became more of a challenge, he was able to stay in the comfort of his home and I was able to help care for him there. We had such great times together. I learned so much about Bob and his genealogy. We read books, we listened to bird CD's and learned to identify the birds by their 'songs'. We would sit on his front and back decks and enjoy the warm weather. We listened to his beloved Yankees' games and he told me stories of his childhood. We listened to music, especially the folk music that he loved so much and we'd actually sing too! We shared many lunches and dinners together and I learned what a fantastic cook Wilma is and why Bob would absolutely love that part of her many talents! We took walks around his neighborhood and shared some great conversations. We played games when his daughters and their husbands would visit. I learned so much about him and his family and I enjoyed every moment.
I am so very grateful and blessed to be a part of Bob and Wilma's family. What a priveldge to get to know Bob in such a personal way. I love that I've been 'adopted' by them and will always feel connected to Bob in that way. Wilma, Alison, Amoshaun, Jessica and Eric, I love you all so very much. I don't know if I'll ever get over my incredible, paralyzing fear of snakes, but Bob was positive that I could.... hmmmmm.... I'll have to wait and see about that one. Thank you Bob! I love you so much!

From my arrival at Penn State as a brand-new PhD, Bob Stern was a source of wisdom and positive affect that was extremely helpful as I made the transition from graduate student to faculty member. He supported me in every way, including appointed me to be Director of Graduate Training shortly after he became Psychology Department Head and I was promoted to Associate Professor. He served as a role model for the integration of science and application that served me well as an Industrial-Organizational psychologist. I enjoyed our mutual love of baseball even though we had different favorite teams. My condolences and those of Diane go out to Wilma, their daughters, and other family members, as well as to his many friends and colleagues. We shall all miss him very much.

Bob, was a very accomplished researcher....and a consistent gentleman and friendly person. I worked with him on the Institutional Review Board. He also gave me advice about how to help my wife and daughter overcome car sickness. And, it worked.
I offer my condolences to Bob's family. I was honored to have known him.

I am so sad to hear Bob passed away. He taught me how to do scientific research and helped me and my family to adjust to the life in the new country. I still vividly remember everything that occurred in these years when I was studying at Penn State. The first day I met Bob in his department head office, we had a very friendly conversation even though it was the first time for me to speak English with people. Learned a lot from Bob. He mentored me to earn both Masters and Ph.D. degrees. He helped me to continue my research in motion sickness for many years even after I moved to California. He was always positive and cheerful to graduate students and colleagues. Bob was the most important person in my academic career. He will be remembered forever. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Senqi

Dr. Bob Stern developed and taught a course on the teaching of Psychology when I was in graduate school. I took this with him, and it is partly through this inspiration that I stayed at Penn State and continue to teach for the department today after earning my degree. I'll never forget those things I learned and now pass on to Penn State students. Bob's legacy is truly great.

I was saddened to read of Bob' death. He was a skilled & kind professor who embodied wisdom and compassion along with a great sense of humor - including to popular press headlines about him and his work with nausea. I knew Bob when I was at PSU from 95 to 2000. He generously gave me a copy of his EGG book when I stopped in to say "hi" in 2000. He was delighted to hear about how many of my psychotherapy clients with anxiety continue to benefit from his work about the psychophysiology of the GI system, including but not limited to his work elucidating the mechanisms of nausea. Thanks to Bob's compassionate efforts along with his collaborators & past students (who now continue in the field), many can experience relief from the suffering of nausea related to the impact of distress on the migrating motor complex & other GI variables of which there are so many! I did not realize he wrote a book about growing up in NY - I look forward to reading it and having a chance to be touched once again by his wonderful sense of humor! With you all in grief and wishing Bob's family & friends peace and support during this extremely difficult time as grieving begins.

I am so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I miss our talks, Bob was open to talk about anything. We sang together at time or he just listened to the terrible singing from me. He will be greatly missed.
