I had Dr. Bergman as my advisor at PSU when I was there in the 70s. He was always so helpful and supportive. I tried to make contact with him last summer but could not find any contact except his email at PSU. I had been thinking of him and thought that I would reach out.
He was such a great mentor!
My deepest sympathies to his family.

Ernie was one of our professors in 1976-77 at Penn State. What a great man he was, always so animated during his lectures. He was truly one of the best professors I ever knew. Knowledgeable, passionate, and hard working. Dr. Bergman always had an opinion and was not shy sharing his opinions.

A truly remarkable man who always had a witticism, and an opinion, at the ready. He did so much in his field, but branched out, so to speak, into areas ranging from politics to postal history. it was great to know Ernie.

Ernie made his way through life with a large bow wave. It was always a pleasure to talk with him in our occasional encounters. Never the politician -- he always spoke his mind -- yet such a record of public service! He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.

The man, the myth, the legend......Dr. Ernie Bergman! He was a delightful man with a wicked sense of humor. There was always a bit of mischief in those eyes. He didn't sugarcoat his feelings good or bad. Our family regarded him as an expert in vegetable production and frequently asked him for cultural advice. Mostly we loved seeing him at college or at convention because the real fun was where he was holding court. We had the honor of knowing him and will cherish his memory forever......Boots and Robin Hetherington

I worked at Ferguson when Ernie was a supervisor there. He was one of my favorite people that I got to know while working there. He was dedicated to Ferguson and one of the most colorful persons that I have met. Will always remember my time with him as some of my best memories. My sincerest condolences to his family as he was a wonderful person.

My late father, Tom Roush, and Ernie loved to spend time on the pedestrian bridge at Juniper Village. One time I visited I showed Ernie photos of some cousins vacationing in the mountains of Switzerland. Clearly he was very proud of his European heritage. I remember how he enjoyed decorating his door with cow bells and other Bavarian memorabilia, especially at Christmas. I didn't know much about his life story and accomplishments until reading his obituary. What an life of devotion to his career and fellow Americans. He was a true patriot who wanted to make this country a more perfect union. I am honored to have known him. May he rest in peace.

Ernie Bergman was the reason I decided to accept an Assistant Prof of Horticulture in 1981. I felt fortunate to work with a colleague like Ernie who was always enthusiastic and willing to work with new faculty. He was funny, compassionate and dedicated to graduate education. I will miss out monthly retirement luncheons with Ernie and other retired Horticulture faculty members. May he rest with God.

My husband, Stan Person, knew Ernie when they were both at Juniper. Stan enjoyed his company and they often reminisced about their days at Penn State. He was entertaining and engaging. I was amazed to read of Ernie's extensive background and all his service to his profession and the community. It was an honor to know him.

Ernie was my Kiwanis sponsor. What a guy! When I met him I was employed as long as he was retired. Every meal he took his “distemper” pill.
For his sometimes gruff demeanor he had a kind heart.
Ernie lived a full life dedicated to making this a better place. Rest In Peace Ernie.

Ernie was both a great democrat and a great Democrat. I recall the times he would show up in the CDT newsroom and opine about something regarding freedom, etc. The managing editor later said to me that freedom is more valuable to people who did not have it all their lives than to those of us who were always free.
Ernie not only exercised his beliefs with opinions but he also served his community, including as a supervisor in Ferguson Township. He exemplified public service. We were fortunate that he chose to live in the Centre Region. We all benefited from his service even if we didn't live in his township or belong to his party.
