Michael Micci posted a condolence
Sunday, May 28, 2023
My name is Michael Micci, I am a 32yo Italian scholar and I did not know anything about Michael or his family, although somehow I've always felt like I knew him. I am a University professor myself, although in Old Germanic languages and literatures, something so far from space rockets and astronauts, unfortunately. Still, space has always been one of my gratest passions which I have cultivated through books, films, and much more. Ever since I started my academic career and publishing my works, I have been (mistakenly) associated to Michael's research by search engines like Google and scientific journal repositories such as Academia.edu. Some friends of mine studied on Michael's works during their years as students in space engineering and would often joke about this, saying that another and much more brilliant Michael Micci had already taken the academic path and built an actual reputation somewhere on the other side of the world. I even wrote a sci-fi trilogy set in outer space as a teenager, before even knowing of Michael's existence. I just think it's crazy how life surprises you with unexpected coincidences sometimes, how we seem to be all connected in ways that will always escape our understanding. Sometimes I search for my name on Google, especially when I come out with a new article or book, and every time there is something about Michael popping up, reminding me that there is one Michael Micci who actually turned space travel into his lifetime occupation. I was really sad when I found out about his passing - somehow I have always felt like we would meet one day, being both university professors although in such different fields. Maybe, on a subconscious level, seeing that there was "another me" who made it, gave me enough motivation to keep going when I was a student. I have no idea. I just really wanted to express my condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and tell Michael that I am counting on him for some space exploration, when we meet on the other side. The Micci family has a friend (and maybe even a distant relative?) in me. Please, feel free to be in touch (mim20@hi.is). In any case, I wish you all the best. Michael Micci

Such sad news. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Mike was a Holy Family classmate of mine in the late 60’s. My memories are of a kind, sweet and friendly boy who was always nice to everyone and pretty cute too! I attended Holy Family from 6th through 8th grade. During those three years I knew Mike was a very smart boy. Science was always his thing. He and I were the last two standing once during an abacus competition in 8th grade. I knew I was fast but Mike was unearthly and he beat me handily. I remember being amazed at how is mind just flowed with genius. Even back then we all knew he was the smartest “kid” in the class. Rest In Peace Mike - you were a very sweet boy and you so left the world a much better place. God Bless!

We were so sorry to learn of Mike's untimely passing and we wish to extend our sincere condolences to Cathy, Sofia and Carmen. Mike was a good friend and a wonderful colleague.
When I first joined Aerospace Engineering at Penn State, I wondered how this young person, Mike Micci, could have built this amazing research program in such a short period of time. In my role as department head, I reviewed the performance of all faculty on a yearly basis. It quickly became obvious that Mike was extremely intelligent, well-educated and his colleagues held him in high regard. He demanded the highest performance from his students, and every one of them was thankful for the opportunity to work under his guidance. During the last 15 years it has been a privilege for me to have an adjoining office to Mike, to watch him partner with colleagues and contribute to the leadership of the department’s graduate program. He maintained his outstanding performance throughout his 40 year career, distinguishing himself as one of the most important faculty members in the department history.
The faculty and staff of Aerospace Engineering had many good experiences with Mike and will cherish the memories.

I am very sorry for your loss. Mike and I were in playwrighting classes together and he was my scene partner in an acting class.
Please know that the news of his passing moved through the theater community and, even though we are separated by Covid, everyone is grieving with you.

Dear family Micci,
I got to know Mike at European space conferences, I honestly do not remember which one, it must have been in the late 1990s. We regularly met during these conferences, having not only scientific, but also private exchange. Also, Mike spent some time at DLR Lampoldshausen in Germany where also I was working at that time.
I did not only like his deep knowledge in rocket propulsion, but also his modest and friendly character.
It is a special pleasure to remember when we met at the Bordeaux conference in 2012 where a wine quiz took place during the conference dinner. Unlike me, Mike could easily solve all questions and tasks. Later, he won several bottles of wine. When he and Cathy realized they would get problems getting all the wine back in the airplane, they let me take the last prize instead of them, which finally turned out not to be a bottle of wine, but a a huge corkscrew. We laughed a lot.
I was very bad news when my cousin Kathy Gipe told me that Mike had died much too early. My thoughts are with the whole family.
Mike, I will keep you in very good memory!

Mike and I grew up together. We went to grade school and high school together. I remember working on model rockets in his basement in grade school. We spent hours deciding which one we would save up for and buy next. We'd get them all ready and then launch them in the open fields around our houses (those open fields are long gone!). We spent hours dreaming about and following the space program. He, Rick Kabat and I were immersed in it, it was fun and exciting. Mike and I saw each other again a few years ago at a Catholic High reunion. I was excited to catch up with him and learn of his many accomplishments. All of us at Holy Family Grade School knew Mike was smart, and none are surprised by his accomplishments.
We are praying for Mike's family as you struggle to cope with the loss of such a fine man! He will be missed. Thankful that my path and his were able to cross those many years ago. Praying for peace in your loss and joy in the memories that will always be with us!
