Judd Arnold
He was an Elizabethan Scholar who could operate a miter saw and play the piano. Renaissance men envied him. He made the “P” in PhD mean something. Most important, he was my friend.
Travel well, Old Friend, until we meet again

Betty,
I am so sorry to read of Judd’s passing. He was a kind and generous and funny (and smart!) man. He was always interested to stop and talk and catch up on news. I know you take comfort in the wonderful years you had together.
Fondly,
Carol and Steve

Dear Betty,
We're so sorry to hear about Judd's passing. Rachael, Oscar, and I always enjoyed talking with you both. You were always very kind to us in the neighborhood, and we felt welcomed. Judd was always pleasant, always said a kind Hello or asked how we were doing. I always enjoyed chatting with him. We're sending him, you, and your whole family good thoughts.
Love,
Casey, Rachael, and Oscar Wiley

Dear Betty, Jim and I hold Judd in the light of his kindness to us over the years, his warmth in every encounter, and his good spirit in a rapidly changing department. He always took the time to ask "How ARE you?" in a way that suggested he really wanted to know. His retirement came less than a decade after we started at Penn State, but his example of camaraderie and good citizenship was a potent example of how to be a good colleague. We feel richer for having known him. Good wishes, Charlotte Holmes

Betty,
I was shattered to learn of Judd's passing. I don't pretend that I knew him well, but I sat behind the two of you in Rec Hall for decades and always enjoyed our interactions. Attending wrestling matches now will be bittersweet. My heart aches for you.

We first met Betty and Judd in September, 1967 just after we arrived in State College. They invited us and our sons over for ice cream. We have been friends ever since, Judd recruited me to help with Seventeenth-Century News, OLLI,, and to become a season ticket holder for Penn State wrestling. Our offices in the English department were close by and for years we spoke daily about what was going on. Judd had a very positive attitude. He spoke well and kindly of everyone and he was a good citizen always willing to help out. He loved the clarity of good carpentry. He also persuaded us to stay every year at the Jetty Motel in Cape May. For years he hosted at his home meetings of the junior faculty and the annual fall gathering of English Renaissance faculty. Not always easy to get us all together in one room.
Long time member of the Faculty Senate and the Penn State Choral Society
He loved to help out. He loved to praise the accomplishments of other people.

We are so sorry to learn of Judd’s death. He was a little ahead of us at PSU and in life. Jack and I always admired the quality of his and Betty’s marriage. We would run into them in town and think afterwards, “We hope we are so close at their age.” Thanks for the example, Judd and Betty.

As Linda said, the Selzers are saddened by Judd’s loss—and ever so grateful for his everlasting good will and good example. (And I found him wonderful to play cards with: willing, sociable, and too honest to be much of a bluffer.) We send our deepest condolences to those who loved him most.

I was so sad to hear of Judds passing. I worked with him on the Penn State Wrestling Newsletter for many years, and got to know he and Betty well. I enjoyed his dedication and quiet humor. Another connecting point was through my father, Gene Goodwin, who was one of the many poker buddies of Judds over the years. May he live on in the hearts of all the many people his life touched throughout his life.

Dr. Judd Arnold was one of the best Professors I had at Penn State. He brought his course material, (especially Shakespeare course), alive to all students and was well liked by all. Years after I graduated from PSU, I would see him at different youth and collegiate wrestling events. Judd and his wife, Betty, were always friendly to all of s students. He was an icon to all students who were English majors. He will be greatly missed.

It is with sad hearts that we hear of Judd’s passing. We first met Judd while traveling on bus trips to Penn State wrestling dual meets and tournaments and quickly came to regard him as a dear friend. He always chose to sit on the window side of the bus in order to get a better view of the sights particularly the architecture of buildings and the vastness of the countryside as we passed. We will always appreciate Judd’s storytelling as he shared experiences of growing up in Manhattan, traveling on European river cruises, spending time in England to feel near to the Shakespeare that he dearly loved and driving cross country viewing the horizon as Betty read her books. Judd was an optimist who saw the best in everyone.
