I realize this is much after the fact, but I just had a memory of Dr. Aplan as I was working today and looked his obituary up. I just wanted to add what an influence he was through his rigorous teaching of mineral processing concepts when I took his classes back in the 1980s. We came up with the phrase "Fast Frank" to allude to the pace you had to maintain to keep up with him in his lectures. And he had strict standards in his class assignments and tests. I just looked at my notes from Mn Pr 301 in 1980, which I have thankfully saved, and he wrote "Do not write on back of paper!" on one of my turned-in problem sets and took off 3 points. (Luckily, I still got an A.) He was demanding but fair, and he made you better!
He obviously left a lovely family legacy and I wish you the best.

Great professor and engineer. Among those in the field of mineral processing that won't ever be forgotten. As my father (who was born in the same year as Prof. Aplan), went very young to fight for freedom in Europe. These people are indeed those that should be called true heroes. My deepest condolences and my full respect to all in his family.

Susan and family,
I am sorry to learn of the passing of your father. I had the great fortune to meet him at his induction into the National Mining Hall of Fame. It was clear then, as it is reading through the memories expressed here, what an influence he has had on so many people. Truly a legacy. My condolences to your family.

It is with deep sympathy and sorrow that Linda Johnson Wallace and her 4 daughters express condolences to the family of Frank Aplan. For over 25 years both families lived next door to each other and shared many life experiences within a close knit neighborhood where laughter of friends and their children was abundant. He will be missed!

Dr. Aplan was and still is a major influence in my life. He taught me so much about life, work ethic, perseverance and doing the right thing which, I continued to realize throughout my 40 year career. I've used more of his colloquialisms with my family, friends and employees than I'd like to admit. I am both fortunate and honored to have been one of his students. Frank is a man whom I will always be grateful to and will never forget. Until we meet again...

The impact that Mr Aplan has had on my life is one that is not known to many. As the recipient of the Frank F. & Clare M. Aplan Natives in Metallurgy scholarship at South Dakota Mines, I have experienced Frank's generosity first hand, from my very first semester here. I am extremely grateful to the long-lasting impact Frank has had on this university as well as my life. Despite never personally knowing him, I have felt a connection as both a fellow South Dakotan, Soldier, and aspiring Metallurgist.
My condolences to his surviving family and that may you have strength in this difficult time.

Frank, Thank you for your advice in the early days of my career. It was always a pleasure seeing you here in Butte at your alma mater visiting for reunions, advisory board meetings, graduation, and even vacation. I have particularly fond memories of dinner at The Bronx in 2000 for your 50th reunion and lunch at The Montana Club in 2015 when you received the Chancellor's Medallion. Those were two moments in time we got to know each other better on a personal level. Aside from mineral processing, your passion to "pay forward" by helping others is our commonality. You helped cement that in me. God Bless You. Rest in peace, my friend. Courtney Young, Montana Tech, Butte MT
Miriam and I express our deepest sympathies to the Aplan Family and the Penn State Community. Having Frank in our lives, a true friend, scholar and gentlemen, was a blessing. He will be missed. God Bless you all.
