Sometimes you don’t truly appreciate what you have lost until you spend some time without him. I miss J very much. He was different than everyone I have ever known. Perhaps growing up in Northwest Missouri was different than growing up in Brooklyn. I appreciated his outlook, his sage advice and his humor even though we often disagreed. He was truly a great mentor and friend.

Marian, Judy and I have many fond memories of Jay from our activities with the Smeal College Alumni Society Board. We especially remember the year the Board established the Hammond Society in his honor. Humble, kind and sincere in the midst of adulation. You might also remember how you both opened your house to us when we, alone, appeared at you door one night after an ASB Board meeting. Our sympathy and wishes for comfort when adapting to a different style of life.

Dear Marian, Nancy and Michael
My deepest sympathies.
I have only the fondest memories of J as first, a colleague, second, a most supportive dean and third, and, as a friend. His generosity, directing his time and energy into a position (dean) that he did not seek, was an excellent example of selfless service. He did a great deal of good for many of us, and I am personally very grateful for his support
And, as Marian well knows, he shared my love of wine and food. I will treasure the memories of sharing those pleasures.
He will be missed. Again my condolences.

JD was a special man and friend. We got to know him when PSU set up ceo - dean meetings. He was quite the character. We vacationed together with a group of PSU ers on St John where JD established himself as the king of Gimlet makers and he was. To know him was to love him and his family. Jean and I will miss him. Condolences to the Hammond family on behalf of my sister, Helen Brown, and myself. JD was our second-cousin, two days older than me, and my best pal during our "growing up" days. Both of us farm lads, we spent sunny summer days playing in dusty old hay barns, damming up creeks and playing catch. Many Sunday dinners were enjoyed at his Goodpasture grandparent's home and afterwards we would play lawn croquet along with younger cousin Charles Bethel. JD was an avid Bosox fan, Ted Williams his sports hero. One lasting memory is of game 7 of the 1946 World Series, Red Sox vs. my team, the Cardinals. The high school boys had a softball game that day and the lower grades were dismissed to watch. JD brought a small radio and we listened to the game, a sad day for the Sox who lost and a disappointment for my pal. One grade school enterprise was a comic book swapping scheme involving others our age. Later, in high school days, JD became adept with a pool cue and won many 8-ball games at a nickel apiece. He was a jazz music fan and had a Stan Kenton album collection that he tried to subject me to, but my tastes then ran more to Hit Parade pop and folk genres. Then college came and we went to different schools, chose different careers and just drifted out of contact with each other. JD introduced me to Marian at his mother's home in Maitland, probably about the time of their marriage. I don't think we met again until 2001 at our 50th high school class reunion when JD emceed the program. Well, what can I say. We lost a very good man and I can only wish the best for his family and others who will miss him. David Roberts

Dear Marian, Nancy and Michael,
Please accept our deepest condolences over the loss of your beloved husband and father. We have many fond memories of "J" over the years....one that is top of mind was when we (as young faculty at PSU) had dinner at your home in College Heights. We listened to Jazz music and J described in detail his stereo system! It was a new frontier for us-we were dazzled! J's legacy is so large; he did so much for the greater good of his family, friends and profession. May you find peace in knowing that J made a difference in the lives of many.
God Bless,
Penny Kris-Etherton and Terry Etherton

I was privileged to meet and get to know JD some years ago when running for the Board of Trustees as an alumni-elected candidate. His wise counsel, original insights and deep knowledge of institutional realities were matched only by his generous spirit, kindly manner, and great warmth and compassion. His accomplishments were many, but his impact on others through his example of being the consummate gentleman and scholar, will continue to inspire and illuminate for many years to come. I miss him already...

Dean Hammond was a man who left an impact on everyone he encountered. He had a quiet influence, offering his Invaluable advice. He thought before he spoke but when he spoke it carried the force of his wisdom. And he was patient with so many of us who grew up in College Heights. As a Dean he left Penn State a much better place because of his vision and leadership.

JD Hammond was among the most highly regarded Fellows in the history of the S. S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education at the University of Pennsylvania. I arrived at Penn about three years after he left and his memory loomed large among those Fellows who had been at school with him. Likewise, he was often praised by the faculty, especially Dr. Dan M. McGill. Over the years I had the pleasure of meeting with "J" on various occasions and was always impressed by his wisdom, wit, and down to Earth manner. He truly was a giant in the Risk Management & Insurance field and in business education; he affected the lives of many, including many who did not have the privilege of knowing him. I send my condolences to all his family and the many friends who will miss him. Bill Rabel, Tuscaloosa, AL

Dean Hammond was an amazing man who helped so many students and colleagues in his career. Personally he was my mentor and my friend through some very challenging times in my life as well as some of the highlights of my career. He inspired me and he challenged me. The memory of my frequent lunches with him on the patio at Centre Hills CC will forever remain in my heart and mind. My condolences to Marian, Michael and my good friend Nancy. Rest easy Dean Hammond and Thank You! Joe Battista
