Dear Dorrie, Gill and Kathy,
we recently got the message that Jeff has died of his cancer, and I would like to express my heartfelt condolences.
I think I got to know Jeff personally sometime during the 1970s when Dorrie, Anita, Bob and Jeff visited their father's hometown Überlingen in Germany. Dorrie, you will know this better than me. I was a little boy at that time and I remember that Jeff had the most American-sounding name for my young German ears. "Anita" was a German name anyway, "Bob" was at least known as a first name, "Dorrie" did not sound so American either -- at least if it was pronounced in the German way we did it -- with the r pronounced deep in the throat. But Jeff with this leading "J" sounded special!
I don't have so many memories of this event in the 1970s -- it seems to me from today's perspective that you arrived late in the evening and I had to go to bed, but of course I remember Jeff from some gatherings in the 1980s both in Germany and of course in the USA when I spent 3 months with the Roberts family. We also spent one week together at Bethany Beach and I also remember visiting you in Frederick. The next times we met was in 1993, and the last time was in 2010 when Carolin and I could spend some unforgettable days with the whole family at Bethany Beach.
My memories of Jeff are all pleasant, I like thinking of him with his - from my point of view - gentle personality (I don't know whether you can say this in English -- Dorrie, I mean "sanftes Wesen").
I especially remember when he told me in 2011 about his stay in Austria as early as 1963 where he worked in steel industry. It must have a great time for him. Just two months before his death, we had some short e-mail contact when I told him I was in Graz (Austrian city) where he once was working. He corrected me that it was Linz (another Austrian city...) and once again repeated that he has wonderful memories from this time.
Memories can be very valuable. And fortunately, I am sure that the three of you have valuable memories of the common time that was given to you.
I will keep a very good memory of Jeff and I wish you that your good memories can help you in these difficult times.
Best regards,
Manuel and Family
München, Germany

Dorrie,
I learned of Jeff's death through a close mutual friend from our class at Apinwall High. Let me send my condolences to you and your family, but these are tempered by great memories of evenings with you and Jeff at your parents' home on Margey Drive. We haven't kept in touch much since high school (and later when I delivered the Derge VW to Amherst) but I was inspired to read of Jeff's life and accomplishments which I know he shared with you and with Bob and Anita.
Love and health to you and your family,
Gene Switkes

I worked with Jeff for 13 years at SAIC-Frederick.
As a team of scientific and contract management we traveled throughout Europe and the U.S.A in awarding, and managing research contracts.
Some of my most rewording work was achieved with Jeff. He was such a positive person with quiet determination in everything he was involved.with.
I don't think I ever saw him when he wasn't smiling!
I miss you.
Rest in Peace, Jeff.

Those of us in the Villa Estates neighborhood have missed Jeff since he moved away, but will always remember him as a good neighbor and friend. Personally, I knew Jeff from NCI-Frederick for many years, where we worked together on a number of projects. He was always known for good judgement and as a helpful and knowledgeable colleague. He will be missed.

Jerry Moore posted a condolence
Saturday, December 5, 2020
My name is JT Moore. I retired from the National Cancer Institute at Frederick (Fort Detrick) in November 2019, after 31 years of service. Jeff was a friend and mentor. It was he that was greatly instrumental in helping me to become the Facility’s Radiation Safety Officer during my last 20 years of service. I had great respect for Jeff; and gaining his mutual respect will always mean the world to me. His life touched a lot of folks; he will be sorely missed....
