Gina & Don Leon posted a condolence

As next-door neighbors of Greta's for 34 years (until she moved to Brookline) we saw a lot of one another. She loved our kitties and went out of her way to care for a succession of cats whenever we needed her in order to travel to visit our far-flung daughters. Without her I don't know what we would have done. Not to mention all the last-minute cake or cookie ingredients I often needed when baking ...and I could always count on Greta to come through. One year we asked to borrow her potato peeler (which she didn't have) and an hour later she pulled into our driveway to give us a new peeler she had just gone out to buy. One thing she didn't love was snakes: If a harmless garter snake appeared within a block of her house she'd run over and beg Don to please get rid of it. She wouldn't even look at a magazine cover if it depicted any sort of reptile.
I always enjoyed how she'd engage workers who came to her house in conversation that lasted a lot longer than it should have, and was frequently punctuated by raucous laughter. Her huge smile and sparkling eyes defined Greta's love of life. And what a true friend she was...not only to us, but to anyone who needed her. I recall how, no matter what hour or the day or night, if her friend who had dementia had wandered off she'd jump into her car and search, even if it meant hours on the road to destinations unknown.
Our grandkids from Colorado would run to Greta's before coming to our house because she always made them feel important and loved. Justin and Ella adored Greta. Also, the chocolates didn't hurt. We love you, Greta.

My memory of Greta was that she was an outgoing and very friendly person. I met her when I began my employment with Penn State University In 1972 in my first job working in the Kern Graduate Building. To her family you have my deepest sympathies. James Locker
