I met Bill while attending Penn State. I was also lucky to have Bill and his wife present several programs at Blue Knob State Park and Shade Central City Heritage Days Festival. He was always an inspiration to me and all the program attendees. He will be greatly missed.

I’m so very sorry to hear of Mr. Metzel’s passing. As a new teacher, I was fortunate to have had both of the Metzel children in our room. Mr. Metzel enthusiastically volunteered in our room and school for many years, much to the delight of everyone. My thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

It was with much sorrow that we learned of Bill’s passing but also not without much joy in remembering happier times. Having moved to Boalsburg in the early 1980’s Mary took her infant & toddler children for a trip to visit Shaver’s Creek where she first encountered Bill. They got to talking about all manner of things (which she later learned was Bill’s way) but primarily of his joy of his family, Deb, Abigail and Nathan. So surprised were we to learn that he was the Son-in-law of our next-door neighbor. Although we would be sure to have met him many times as he participated in so many Boalsburg activities. A truly learned man with so many and varied skills from climbing our tree and sawing its branches for us to whittling, blacksmithing, storytelling and making/playing wooden whistles for the children. He was a good friend, husband and father whose life touched so many around him with his good will, helpfulness and ever-present cheer.
We send our deepest condolences to Deb, Abigail, Nathan, Erica, Tyler and Jacob.
Sincerely, Mary & John Nousek

Bill will be remember for his kindness and generosity. I will remember the time that he snowplowed my driveway during the two snowstorms in the 90s. He will be deeply missed!!!

I got to know Bill when our sons were in Cub Scouts together and we were adult leaders. His enthusiasm, weatlh of knowledge and "joie de vivre" made working alongside him easy. It cannot be overstated how valuable and important I feel he was.

I had many fun and interesting conversations with Bill as I walked past his home. He had a wealth of knowledge about many topics. He fought hard this last month to stay here with us on earth but it was time for him to go. He will be greatly missed as I walk past his home.
